Lakka 2.1.1 Audio Issues Using HDMI

I don’t want to be that one guy who says he’s tried every single fix he could find online and still nothing has worked, but here we are. I’ll try literally anything anyone suggests, even if I’ve already done it.

I had Lakka running live from a USB using a spare PC with a GTX 770, and it was fine. Audio was great, picture was great, but I use the PC for modern games too, so I decided to upgrade to an RX 580. Now no matter what audio device I use, there’s no audio. The setup is exactly the same: HDMI from the GPU to my receiver, which is plugged in to my TV. This issue is present in both the stable release 2.1, and this newer 2.1.1 release.

So you did cycle through all hdmi device and you did not get sound ? You need to close and restart your game for the audio switch to take effect.

Is it possible to get also the ouput of dmesg.

I tested the audio on another PC also running an RX 580 hooked up to a different receiver and still no audio. I want to try hooking the PC up directly to a TV to eliminate variables, but I can’t do that right now because after about 5 minutes of testing I can no longer cycle through the audio drivers, the setting is just frozen on whatever was there last. I’ve seen this mentioned as a bug before but I read it was fixed, do you have a solution to that? Otherwise I have to make a new USB.

OK, I tested the system plugged in to a standard 1080p TV using HDMI with nothing in between, and again, cycling through the drivers (resetting the game after each change) did nothing. No audio using an RX 580. I updated the video and sound drivers for the GPU and motherboard, and still no change.

I figured out a workaround for now though. I plugged in a 3.5mm cable to the AUX jack on the receiver coming from the speaker port on the motherboard itself, and I now have sound. If we’re trying to diagnose the issue, remember the GTX 770 I used before this was working fine using HDMI audio. I confirmed audio over HDMI was fine in Windows 10, and now I know I can get sound using my motherboard audio. That tells me there’s something funky going on with the RX 580 and Lakka.

All that being said, I would still like help getting audio over HDMI to work, so if you have any more suggestions please let me know!

EDIT: I also figured out a workaround for the audio driver selection menu freezing and not letting you cycle through them. Press “start” or “enter” to clear the selected driver, shutdown the computer, switch the USB drive to another USB port, enter the OS again, and the issue is fixed. Perhaps this is just an issue with the live USB version of Lakka?

I’ve tried to install the latest versions of both the nightly build and the experimental build, but for some reason when I get to the first command screen that allows you to choose between “live” and “installation”, no matter which choice I make, my computer just resets without the install taking place. I will continue to test this and hopefully I’ll get it working.

For the record, I’m using an ISO labeled Lakka-Generic.x86_64-3.0-devel-20180703104709-2fb13c2 to create a USB using both Win32DiskImager and Rufus 3.1 (to make sure it’s not just one of the programs functioning incorrectly).

Can you try to boot in live mode with live ssh tty retroarch=0 and get some dmesg output and lakka system log using the experimental build ?

If I am correct, you card is from Polaris 10 family so we will have to use at least kernel 4.15 to make audio hdmi to work.

So you should make a test with the experimental build definitely.

I’ll try and test the Experimental Build sometimes tomorrow. Which version do you suggest I use for a Generic 64-bit PC? The newest builds don’t seem to include the x86-64 version.

EDIT: NVMD, looks like the one I’ve been trying to use is indeed the latest one.

Perhaps I’m just not tech-savvy enough for this, but I’m about at my breaking point here. I can’t even get an experimental build to install for some reason. Correct me if I’m wrong in any of these installation steps:

  1. Downloaded 2.1.1 for Generic 64-bit PC
  2. Use Win32DiskImager/Rufus to create bootable USB using the 2.1.1 image
  3. Boot from USB at start up
  4. Wait for installation to finish creating a live version of Lakka on the USB
  5. Once PC resets, boot from USB again and Lakka will start after a delayed first time startup

This process works just fine for the official 2.1.1 image, but when I try the exact same process for the experimental build labeled “Lakka-Generic.x86_64-3.0-devel-20180703104709-2fb13c2”, at step 4 when you’re on the command line screen waiting for it to begin installation, my computer just resets. No matter what I put in, I just get a reset. I can’t get the build to install on to the USB or a drive in my computer. I’m sure I’m doing something wrong, as I’ve seen no one else having this issue.

EDIT: Ok, something new happened. I tried installing an older experimental build, and while it still would not install, it got the flower logo and then a message saying “Couldn’t find an input interrupt endpoint”, and then it goes to a black screen and just sits there until I manually reset the PC.

I’ve yet to figure this issue out. It sounds like the RX 580 just isn’t completely supported by Lakka at the moment. Issue is still present in stable 2.1.1. I’ve not been successful in creating an Experimental boot device for some reason, so I can’t test if the RX 580 audio is working there.

I have audio working using a 3.5mm jack to the AUX port on my receiver, and I’m just gonna stick with that until the RX 580 is supported in a stable Lakka release. For now I’ll consider this issue settled.

With a GTX 770 Hooked into HDMI I had the same issue. Somehow my audio was routed through channel 1 instead of 0, so have you tried changing your channel by chance?

I had to do the same for my GTX 770. Switched from 0 to 1 and it worked fine. The issue is my new RX 580. None of the channels work. I’ve tried them all.
