Probably the best thing to work on is the Qt desktop UI that bparker and Tatsuya79 have been developing. It’ll be the easiest for you to modify, you can use normal Qt tools, etc.
The main gamepad-driven UI is all written in C and is unfortunately very complex (even for people accustomed to the codebase), so it’s probably not a good place to start.
