Hello @lfan, Do you use the MAME core in RetroArch? If so, how do you target the vertical MAME games in order to load vertical specific config containing the overlay and shader?

Using the original MAME you can create just two overlays named: vertical.ini & horizont.ini in the INI folder and corresponding artwork files in the Artwork folder and they will be used for all horizontal/vertical games with no custom artwork.

I don’t know if this trick works with the libretro MAME cores…

@lfan, thanks for the response. I thought you may have found a way to target vertical MAME roms using RetroArch without having to create batch scripts and mess with separating rom files.

@Crush, I’m currently using and have been using official MAME for 10+ years and use the horizont.ini and vertical.ini to target the two aspect ratios and this works perfect. :+1:

Just wanted to get everything under RetroArch because of the shader support.

Maybe it’s not possible to do something similar in the RetroArch MAME core just yet.

There’s a bounty open to support MAME’s artwork formats in RetroArch and someone has expressed interest in working on it but no code has been submitted yet.

@shenglong, please, take a look at this updated post:

Just contributed a small amount from my humble self towards this bounty, even though the bounty is for MAME artwork, I am hopeful (please) that whoever codes this allows for use of something similar to horizont.ini and vertical.ini where you can override overlays AND shaders via custom configs based on screen orientation in latest MAME core.

@shenglong, did the batch files work for you?

Thanks for your efforts on the batch file, I’m sure many users will find this valuable, unfortunately I haven’t had a chance to try it. Having said that however, I do try and keep up-to-date with new MAME romset releases, which currently happen every month so would prefer not to rely on a batch file each time a new release happens. This is why I was hoping there could be a way for the Libretro MAME core to target screen orientation out of the box like the official MAME can do with ini files.
