Separate emulators or Retroarch?

Depends on the emulator? Both Dolphin and PCSX2 got many accuracy related updates after the last time the cores were on par. Thus the standalones are more accurate because of that.

Yes Ares is the most accurate for N64 right now. For SNES it’s BSNES, for Genesis it’s BlastEm, for NES i would say Messen, for Master System i’m not sure.

BSNES, BlastEM and Messen all have pretty up-to-date RA cores so you are set.

In the past I used bsnes then higan which version of bsnes to use core from retroarch or a separate emulator?

MegaDrive BlastEm, for NES Messen are the cores updated like the separate emulator? and ps1?

For bsnes, get the core called just bsnes, with no extra suffixes. All the other ones are properly updated to a point there’s no significant difference between individual emulators. Don’t worry about that.

For the original PlayStation, I suggest the Beetle PSX core. However, if you’re into things like upscaling, then the SwanStation core might interest you more.

Usually the cores and shaders are updated to the newest version through the Retroarch online updater.

Retroarch: Main Menu -> Online Updater

The latest Retroarch versions are called ‘nightly’ versions.

You can download them from here:

many files what chosee unique file complete full latest cores, updates, Retroarch, shaders

If you are on Windows, get the latest stable RetroArch here: https://buildbot.libretro.com/stable/1.19.1/windows/x86_64/

Download the .exe version. It’s a good starting point.

Does the .exe version contain the latest all cores and shaders releases? or download separate?

You install it and download them from within the application. User guest.r told you how to do it.

all updated shaders are already included inside the RetroArch.7z file???

Yes, the archive RetroArch.7z will have shaders included but you will have to update as it is stable version using Main tab > Online Updater > Update Slang Shaders.

Here is the list of files, if needed.

Then, you will need to install Libretro cores.

If needed, please check our documentation as @thingsiplay already mentioned.

Thank you.

I’m not going to update within retroarch but I would like to download all the latest shaders in 1 single pack file

There are advantages in retroarch, ie Flycast allows wide screen while standalone Redream (Android) doesn’t, more options to tweak performance and enchance display quality, tweak vmu position/size and more. Redream runs a bit faster though (RE Code Veronica 60 frames, Flycast 30, can go higher but locked to 30). With all the enchancements i would probably go with Retroarch to say the truth.

Many dreamcast games, including RE Code Veronica, are 30Hz games. I heard redream run those at 60Hz but i don’t know the specifics, isn’t it simply duping frames ?

As for performance, you want to use vulkan on any hardware-rendered core if it’s available, it has far less overhead than opengl when going through the libretro api.

I was comparing d3d11 with vulkan in Flycast recently and found 18 Wheeler had graphical corruption issues in the menus in d3d11 that aren’t a problem in vulkan. That’s with per pixel accuracy and full framebuffer enabled at native res for both. So I assume the vulkan renderer is better and/or more tested.
