Softpatching ips rom hacks

Has anyone got softpatching to work? I’m trying to use Final Fantasy Rebalanced for NES. I unzipped Final Fantasy (USA).nes, renamed it Final Fantasy Rebalanced.nes. Dropped Final Fantasy Rebalanced.ips next to it. When I try to launch it, RA closes and returns me to the XMB.

I have verified I have the correct rom for the ips hack through SHA-1. I have tried both the Nestopia and FCEU cores. I have tried 1.7.2 and 1.7.3 I have tried Final Fantasy Redux.ips and it does the same thing: crashes back to the XMB.

I would hard patch a copy of the rom file and transfer it to the ps3, but my laptop is a mac and it doesn’t run exe (lunarips.exe).

I found a mac ips app, patched Final Fantasy Redux, and played it as a normal rom in RetroArch. I did the same with Rebalanced, and it said it was successful, but I see no indication in the game that it worked.

Anyhow, soft patching does not appear to be working in RA 1.7.3 on PS3.
