Goodnight!! Here is a classic Arcade, I used this amazing marquee and bezel from @ArsInvictus Thank!!
Viper Phase 1 (Seibu - 1995)
This one was quite an effort to put together. I was able to track down one of the few remaining copies of the bezel from a collector, TheJeffMatson, who provided a high resolution scan that I restored. The marquee I picked up from eBay and scanned and restored as well.
This is a spin off game from the Raiden series and the only title in that series to diverge from the Raiden branding, which (along with the fact it never had a home release so can only be played on MAME) has probably contributed to the relative obscurity of the title. Despite that, it is still respected as a very good shoot-em-up, which you can read more about here: Hardcore Gaming 101 - Viper Phase 1
One helpful note, when you start this game for the first time it will count down from 999. Once that completes, hit Tab and flip the jumper JP1 from the Update state, then choose reset. This will write data to the nvram files and the game should start immediately going forward.
Hope you enjoy!
That Gorf is wonderful.
Great contributions, Walter! Thanks so much. Beautiful.
Ars – Thanks for your archival effort with Viper Phase 1. Hadn’t heard of this one. Played it through to the end. Really immersed. My 18 year old even commented as he entered the garage to do some laundry: “Great soundtrack on that game.” It’s a fairly forgiving schmup. Love that the bombs absorb incoming bullets for a panic-button effect. One I would have loved as a kid with limited quarters.
Thanks for the Friday night fun, guys!
I’m glad you liked the game! I haven’t had the time to play it much yet, but I will give it some time this weekend I hope
More Raiden on the way!
Raiden Fighters 2
Another in the Raiden series as requested by @Rion. The marquee here was another eBay pickup and restoration.
This game has the same startup sequence as Viper Phase 1, so see the write up there for instructions on how to set up the first time.
@thoggo Played Donkey Kong 3 at length tonight. Underrated game! Thought tonight how well received this one might have been if not for the inevitable comparisons to DK and DK Jr. It’s one of a kind! Main reason for positing here is to say how much I love the layout you chose for your Nintendo cabs. Love that you include marquee, bezel, CPO and just a bit of the pedestal. Totally see your rationale for doing so, as that Nintendo speaker grill just below the CPO is iconic.
I love everything all you guys do. You really can’t miss!
@Briball I love this one so much. Fantastic work. My buddy Crow had this one in his garage when we were kids (parents owned coin-op business). Love that you included the behind screen graphics. Beautiful! One small observation: On my MAME installation, there is a vertical white bar directly to the right of the illuminated start buttons that synchronizes with the button illumination. It’s totally possible that it’s unique to my installation. Hope it goes without saying that it’s no big deal. I can totally hang with it. But, thought I’d report it to you nonetheless. I’m on mame0181b_64bit
Thanks @benlogan! I agree, Donkey Kong 3 is a great game, and very different from the other DKs and too often overlooked. Glad you’re liking the look, I definitely wanted to capture that beautiful Nintendo cabinet design, I hope it feels as close as possible to standing in front of the real thing without filling your basement with Nintendo cabs.
Thanks, glad you’re liking it. I liked adding the reflection of the buttons, thought it would be an added detail you don’t see that often.
I’ll have a look at that issue as I know what it is and I thought I fixed it, maybe I didn’t upload correct images. FYI it’s probably because of a resulution difference (you’re not in 4k right?). MAME then does a bit of rounding off of the transparency layer causing a bleed. Well that’s what I think it is.
Beautiful absolutely stunning! Thank you so much!
Tutankham (Konami/Stern – 1982)
Developed by Konami and released by Stern in the US, Tutankham (supposedly so named because “Tutankhamen” wouldn’t fit) combined the maze game craze popular in the early 80s with Defender-like shooter mechanics to create a challenging dungeon crawl through ancient Egyptian tombs. You can shoot the enemies that chase you, but only in left-right corridors, which adds a level of strategy beyond the usual maze run. Swipe the treasures on each level, grab the key to advance and see how deep you can go.
The MAME version includes a non-CPO version based on the CPO art, for those that prefer that sort of thing.
!! HELP WANTED. !!
OK, I was doing an overlay and got sidettracked into doing this one, gran Trak 10. Just remembered playing it as a kid and realized it was quite significant in the history of the arcade. So made an overlay for it, BUT once finished I couldn’t get it to play on my system. So does anybody have a working version (ROM OR MAME?) or know how to play this game.
So any suggestions on getting this to play, would be great.
Raiden Fighters (Seibu - 1996)
Another in the Raiden series! Fresh scans from NOS copies of the marquee and instruction cards for this one.
Unfortunately, Gran Trak 10 is still not working in MAME at this time. It’s like Breakout or Pong; no ROMS, all TTL circuits.
Nice work!! You’ll just need to save it to the side for awhile, though, before you get to use it.
Thank you! This looks stunning!
Thanks for the info, hopefully someone from MAME might get to fixing it soon(maybe from seeing this overlay) .
Although Pong seems to work. I thought I saw a YouTube video with gran trak working that’s why I was asking.
I’m glad you suggested making these Raiden overlays. I’ve been playing them and I’m a big shmup fan generally and these are now some of my favorites! Just incredibly fun and satisfying gameplay and not as frustrating as many shmups can be. Thank you!
@benlogan and anybody else who has downloaded Asteroids Deluxe overlay for MAME. i think it is fixed.
please grab and replace this zip: astdelux
sorry for the inconvenience, still working out the animated lay files setup.
well like i said in my Gran Trak 10 overlay I was working on something else, well here it is.
Night Driver (ATARI 1976)
now there might be emulation issues, but this one does run on my system, so enjoy another blast from the past.
