Some newer controllers by 8BitDo or Retro-Bit come with additional buttons not found on traditional controllers:
Wouldn’t it make sense to add a dedicated entry for those buttons in the input binding section of RetroArch as well?
That way you could just assign on of those buttons as the “home” button, which in turn could be select as the system wide menu-toggle hot-key.
