Android box from Amazon - Hardware going to be good enough?

Amazon is selling quite a few different android boxes for cheap. They range from 1-2gb ram and seem to be running android 4.2-4.4. They are sold as “streaming” boxes. Overall they are all very similar. None of them are top of the line, however, I am thinking of picking 1 or 2 up because they are so cheap for various projects. One project I want to work on is installing Retroarch and Gamesome on the box and dedicating it a retro gaming station. To that end, has anyone found 1-2gb of ram and 8gb (or so) of ROM to be sufficient to run retroarch? Furthermore, I am assuming that I can use an attaced usb stick or hdd to store the actual roms.

My cousin has an android box with a rockchip cpu and mali 400gpu and retroarch works good for all retro cores (except Mupen and drastic), the fba core runs fullspeed. But I heard the mali gpus are not that good though.
