Best Android app EVER! few Question's ? FBA/NES

First I would like to thank everyone involved in this project.

RetroArch is the best thing on my Nexus 7 tablet by far.

I just discovered this app yesterday and after a bit of reading proceeded to remove all other emulator apps from my Nexus 7. I had paid for some of broglia’s emu’s in the past as there was nothing like this. They have now been removed and never will go back on any of my andoid devices.

I am an old school gamer born in 1980 that started playing games on a Commodore 16 then NES then Snes/Genesis then through the PS generations till present. The good old days. This plays all the classics I loved from my childhood without any problems what so ever. I am set up with Sixaxis app and PS3 pad. Would like to see analog support but its no biggie because to be honest MegaDrive and Snes pads didn’t have analog sticks and that will be what I will be playing most. Played Silpheed on Sega CD a few mins ago with this app without any problems… Took me back to 1993 when games were all I cared for haha

I am a bit confused with final burn alpha is it just CPS1/CPS2/NeoGeo ? Do mame roms run on it ? Mame has always been confusing for me with all the different romset revision etc. Could someone break it down into simple for me. I tried turtles in time mame rom and it worked. I used to play final fight in the arcades as a 12 year old but dont know much other that that. I am a tech head PC repair man that has modded every device I ever had from psp to jailbraiks to rooting to flashing xbox360. Not a noob but a total noob when it comes to understanding mame cps1 cps2. Is there a compatability sheet or something as some roms work some dont.

The last question is what do you guys recommend I use for NES ? There is two cores Nestopia or FCEUmm ?

Sorry for the long ass post but I am excited as this is the best app ive seen to date. The word needs to spread… I’m sure most users are unaware of this app.

Thanks if anyone reads this

Hey man, thanks for the kind words. Glad you’re enjoying the program

Re: FBA, it uses MAME ROMs but it always syncs to the latest MAME ROMset, which is unfortunately a moving target. This makes it hard to find the correct dumps, and even when you do, they may not work with the next release, which is a big PIA, but just the nature of the beast. FBA doesn’t play all of the same games as MAME, notably Killer Instinct and a number of older classics, but it covers more than just CPS1/2 and NeoGeo.

For NES, FCEUmm is perfectly fine and has lower system requirements. NEStopia requires higher performing hardware but is a bit more accurate and some people prefer the color palette (among some other relatively minor differences).

NEStopia doesn’t really require higher hardware - R__ reported to me it runs at fullspeed on a Raspberry Pi, and I tested it and found that it ran at fullspeed (with most games) on a GameCube (the lowest-specced console that libretro supports so far).

Analog stick support on Android will be added eventually but it will depend on whether or not the gamepad you are using has real analog stick support (as defined by the driver) or whether it’s ‘fake’. For instance, if it’s fake (as in - if pressing left on the right stick has been mapped to a predefined key event instead of reporting an x/y value), then it’s digital and we can’t use it for analog.

There are also certain buttons on gamepads that can do this analog-to-Dpad mapping and vice versa.

As for arcade games - there will also be a MAME 0.78 port that will play some games that FBA doesn’t so far. FBA is still rough around the edges for old '80s/early '90s games but CPS1/CPS2/CPS3/Neogeo and some others should run flawlessly.

With FBA - the older games generally require higher system specs than the older games (ie. Power Drift only starts being fullspeed on an Xbox 360, whereas Street Fighter Alpha 3 on CPS2 runs at fullspeed on even a Cortex A8 Android tablet - ie. below Gamecube specs).

Thanks guys I will just stick to using NEStopia my phone despite being 2 years old is still rocking the power (Galaxy S2) and the Nexus 7 too. I always keep a minamilistic android system for performance after rooting (bloatware removed) Greenify installed. No heavy processes running.

Thanks for the arcade games info I will probably only play Final Fight and Street Fighter II on arcade and they both work perfectly. That was the two real Arcade machines that took my money as a kid more than any other. I am struggling to get Super Street Fighter II Turbo working it’s just crashing back to core choice menu. But no biggie as Snes is where I played Street Fighter II turbo most back in 91/92 I even loved it so much I had the special edition for Snes that came in a steel or aluminium chrome case/tin in 92 (Possible favorite game of all time). Mortal Kombat 1 and 2 is up there too.

The pad I am using is official I had trouble with fakes in the past. But analog support doesn’t bother me I actually prefer the old school feel of the Dpad. Snes/Genesis/SegaCD will be what I will play most. I dont care much for PS1… By the time PS1 came out I lost love for games untill GTA Vice City and San Andreas on PS2.

Hopefully the noobs on the Play Store that dont know what a BIOS file is or the ‘I cant find games’ noobs stop leaving 1 star reviews. I cant submit a review as Google+ is required and I dont have that. The app deserves 100 stars out of 5.

Cheers
