Can a AI be implemented that could play games by itself?

I have been thinking about this for many years now. One thing i like about games is watching attract/demo modes in the arcades, or longplay videos in Youtube. So i like the idea of watching someone else play a game that i don’t feel like playing by myself.

Well, now that AI has reached a very high point, could something like RetroArch implement an AI where you load any game from any core and can learn how to play it by itself? Is something like that possible as a concept?

There are game-playing AIs, and I think even a “generalized” one that can play a lot of different games. I’m having trouble finding the article I read on it at the time, though… No good search terms

I don’t know if it/they can operate in real-time or if it’s basically a TAS AI, but in any event, it would need some way to hook in to input and output (either the screen + machine vision, or hooks into RAM values to see when “number goes up”).
