I’m curious if anyone has any experience using any Arcade style joysticks with their Wii in combination with RetroArch. One that I’m seriously considering getting is one from X-Arcade http://www.xgaming.com/store/category/arcade-joysticks-and-game-controllers/. There is a Wii adapter so it should work with the Wii, I’m just not sure if RetroArch is able to use it. If anyone has actually used any of the X-Arcade Joysticks with RetroArch or have used any other really nice ones, please let me know.
I didn’t try this arcade stick out. However, I’ve experienced Retroarch gaming with the Hori Fighting Stick Wii and Neo Geo stick for Wii made by Exar, which both works perfectly. I use myself the Neo Geo stick for Wii everytime. You have the look and feel of the real Neo Geo stick which I love, and the button and the sticks respond perfectly well, without imput lag.
I can confirm that the Tatsunoko vs Capcom Arcade Stick works on Retroarch…at least for SNES and the menu, that’s all I have tested so far. Can’t get any NeoGeo roms to load. I highly recommend this stick because you can choose between 3 modes for the joystick. It can be mapped to the Left Analog Stick, D-Pad, or Right Analog Stick. The stick is recognized as a classic controller so you’ll have to change the settings for the CC in Retroarch if you need to do any remapping. Here is a link to the stick: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0032ISZL … ot_redir=1
EDIT: Forgot to mention, this stick also works for Wii U games such as Tekken. It’s also fairly easy to mod with Sanwa parts. It really is the best stick for the Wii or Wii U, though I’d love to have that NeoGeo stick also.
I picked up one of these cheap on Amazon Marketplace: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Logic-3-GameCub … B000060MTL
I got it for one of my modded GameCubes that I want to embed in a small cabinet with a CRT TV monitor via RGB SCART (240p resolutions in retroarch-gx look GREAT over RGB). It was listed was new but was actually used and stank of cigarette smoke. I made a fuss about it and the seller refunded and I got to keep it. Buttons were fine but the deadzone for the stick was all over the place and leaf switches needed way too much force to engage, especially the left direction (heavy handed backpedalling/dodge/blocking no doubt). However on opening up it was a simple design, very easy to recondition/re-tension them and now it’s working really great. Shows up as a GC controller on Wii obviously, and has a slider switch to change the 8-way joystick mapping to either left or right GC analog sticks or the d-pad. It has rumble support for the stick! I tried it with Soul Calibur II, it felt quite odd. Smash Bros. was just nuts. In Retroarch I use it mostly for easy going stuff like 2-directional 2-button Taito platformers in FBA (Bubble Bobble, Rainbow Islands, New Zealand Story) and the like. The closeness of the buttons suit situations where you need to hold down one and tap the other. Decent response for shmups too - the shameless but enjoyable R-Type knockoff “Last Resort” on Neo-Geo was a good test for that. It’s not the best for what it looks like it was intended for i.e. fighting games but it’s adequate for them. After a good few hours playing I was worried the leaf springs for the left/right stick switches would go saggy again but they haven’t so I’m comfortable and enjoying it now, albeit a bit gentler than would normally be and am avoiding fighters to give it mercy. Good modding potential, if it falls apart I’ll just use it as a breakout box to wire up a decent joystick and button set. If you happen upon a cheap one somewhere it’s definitely fun for trying out classics on a budget.
