Crash when playing NEC Arcade CD-ROM^2 Games

I’ve got (almost) all the NEC systems and formats working to absolute perfection, and with the proper BIOS boot screens no less.

PC Engine HuCards PC Engine CD-ROM^2 Discs TurboGrafx-16 HuCards TurboGrafx-CD Discs PC Engine Super CD-ROM^2 Discs TurboDuo Discs

Hell, I even have the PC-FX games running!

… For the life of me I cannot get the PC Engine Arcade CD-ROM^2 Discs to load though. I get to the boot screen, and can push the run button, but it either crashes immediately or after a few seconds.

I’ve tried using the PCE Fast Core, and the SuperGrafx core, but no change.

I did find an old topic here from back in May where someone was experiencing the same issue, but the thread died without resolution. I know I have the correct BIOS files, and I’ve tried a couple games to make sure it wasn’t just the files.

I could really use some help on this one.

possibly you got a custom-dumped cd images? if you do not have a “redump” verified cd images and cue file(which RA db seems to be based on) big chance you dumps will not work. run them with isobuster-re dump cd as raw/bin and fix unreadable sectors it finds. im playing translated version of Akumajou Dracula X - Chi no Rondo (J) no problems.

I’m not exactly sure what you mean by “Redump verified images”

That being said, I can play Castlevania - Rondo of Blood translated just fine.

However, Akumajou isn’t an Arcade CD-ROM^2 game, it’s a Super CD-ROM^2.

The Super CD games work fine on my setup. It’s only the Arcade CD ones that I’m having a problem with; such as Strider.

I can play a bin/cue (not redump) of Sapphire just fine with the Japanese Super CD-ROM System 3.0 syscard3.pce. I use the SuperGrafx core now, but I worked in the pce_fast core before. That’s the only arcade card game I’ve tried.

i made rio no rondo as example because its a patched game and RA’s cores DO NOT LIKE patched disks like psx but i am able to make things work(extra work neede to make them play in RA than using standalone emulators). search for “redump” dat files, verify your sets, download new ones or make new images or modify your cue sheet.

Policenauts, Tales of Phantasia, Tobal 2, and Castlevania NITM english patches all work fine in the Mednafen core. The FF7 fan translation is an outlier. They were supposed to fix that patch for Mednafen, but must have never got around to it.

I’ll try tracking down a copy of Sapphire and trying it to see what happens. I’ve never attempted this one. I’m pretty sure I’m using the JP Super CD-ROM 3.0 card… but I’ll double check. NEC systems are kind of a mess when it comes to making each version boot with the right bios.

It’s amazing once you get the TGCD games boot with syscard 2 automatically though lol

test it first with standalone emulators, if it runs on those then its again RA that is picky with cue-sheets and image formats. if it ddnt run on standalone-emu then its probably a bad copy. read my thread on zeroigar and create a new cd-image.

Sapphire is running using pce_fast or supergrafx core-its the 2nd game i test(after Rondo of blood) for this system.

Double-checked my BIOS, it’s the PCE 3.0 one for sure.

Well I tried downloading the sapphire game, same result.

Tried downloading Strider from 2 other sources, same result. I converted from bin/iso to bin/cue using Daemon and IMG… same result.

I mounted the disc, opened it with isobuster, extracted, set 0 to all errors, generated a cue file, converted to bin/cue… same result.

i said, test it in other emulators

The CRC of my syscard3.pce is 6D9A73EF. If yours is the same that at least eliminates it being a problem with the syscard your using.

is bios renamed to syscard3.pce and placed into whatever the <system> folder is set in retroarch?

How do I go about checking the CRC of a file? All I know is it’s from the No-Intro set.

Yes, I get the BIOS boot screen, but as soon as I push run… insta crash. Well except for strider, it shows me the dev-logo and freezes instead of spinning… and then it crashes.

i wanted to help out-but i cant not until you can say that you really have a working disc or copy of the game. again for the Nth time, use other emulators to test you games if they will really play or not-play up to a certain point in the game, like stage 2 or something if it plays.
How do I go about checking the CRC of a file? All I know is it’s from the No-Intro set.
I use 7zip. Right click your syscard file and 7zip, Add to “syscard3.zip”. Then open that zip, right click the Name column and check CRC. Then you’ll have a CRC column that will tell you the value for the syscard file in the zip.
