Can we please get an overhaul of the controller mappings?
Here are some suggestions to make it better, because right now it’s extremely un-user-friendly:
All Controller settings should fall under 1 single menu item (with sub-menus as-needed). Having it in 2 separate places is confusing.
- Settings > Controls > Retorarch Menu Controls > Controller Bindings > Player/Port 1
- Settings > Controls > Core-Specific Controls > Controller Bindings > Player/Port 1
- Settings > Controls > Game-Specific Controls > Controller Bindings > Player/Port 1
etc.
For Retroarch Menu Controls, I feel like there doesn’t need to be this virtual controller representation even involved. It ought to just say “select” or “back” and then you can map your buttons to whatever you’d like (e.g. A = “select”, B = “back”, etc.)
-
If I connect an Xbox controller, and try to figure out what “back” button to use, the icon shows down, but the menu says “B Button (Down)” even though down is “A” on Xbox.
-
If i’m using an 8BitDo M30 (Genesis-style) controller, there is no down. The controller is laid out left to right (A, B, & C) so the icons and labels are extra confusing.
For Core-Specific controls, I get this needs to represent a virtual gamepad, which I’m fine if that’s a Switch Pro layout, but you’ve switched the columns in the Quick Menu Control mapping.
-
In the Options > Input section, the virtual buttons are on the left column, and the actual controller buttons are on the right with a button press to map them
-
In the Quick Menu > Controls section, the actual controller buttons are now on the left column, and the virtual game buttons are now on the right with a dropdown instead of a button press.
Why are they like that? I would think you would just have the same layout for both. for the core-specific controls, the virtual buttons (representing the game controller) should stay on the left, and you can press a button to map your physical controller on the right.
Lastly, hotkeys appear to not stick per controller. For some reason they are assigned at a higher level than the controllers, but each controller is different, and the hotkey I assigned to one controller conflicts with the mapping of another.
- I’d like to map the heart button on my 8BitDo controller to Menu Toggle. Retroarch recognizes that as Button 2.
- I’d like to map the Guide button on my Xbox controller to Menu Toggle. Retroarch recongizes that as Button 7.
Now I have a conflict and have to make a sacrifice somewhere which is not ideal.
I understand that Retroarch is having to do a lot with all the different systems and controller types, but I feel it could be laid out more intuitively to make the user experience a lot better.
