Drastic nds emulator?

I heard there will be a new emulator for android that can emulate nds games almost full speed… Can this also be good news for ios?

Why do you assume this will be good news for any one platform, and what does it have to do with RetroArch/libretro?

It is closed source. Exophase doesn’t believe in opensource anymore.

Maybe a great technical effort but ideologically it is wrong in every sense of the word - and to be honest, I think Nintendo actually has a justifiable case for pulling it IF they want to go that length - it is simply way too recent a machine to be selling an emulator for - you can’t even fall back on ‘nostalgia’ even to cover yourself - there is no ‘nostalgia’ to be had here.

This is why you stay opensource if for nothing else - to cover yourself legally AND because it is is the right thing to do. As soon as you charge for something - you are fair game to every commercial company whose intellectual property you are ‘emulating’ or ‘simulating’. Every lawyer in the whole world knows this.

Ever since these app stores launched, emu authors and porters have had a clear conscious moral choice to make - do I compromise on my morals and ideals and start charging for it and littering it with ads, or do I stay true to my morals and refrain from doing that? And sad to say but a lot of them have made that choice and are on the wrong side of history. Either that or they lost their morals - or they never had any to begin with. And it WILL have repercussions in the long run for the scene in general. This is not at all a good development - just like web entrepreneurs are not a good development.

Also - artificially increasing the price to something like $8 just for the ‘psychological effect’ of it having more value if the emulator is priced higher - this is also something I cannot respect, sorry. It isn’t that I want to buy it and I think the price is too high- I can play it on a Pandora if I want - it is that I dislike the entire attitude behind it - to view emulation as a ‘commodity’, something to be commercially exploited - to be more concerned about ‘monetization’ than actually delivering some great software that people can enjoy.

So yeah - I definitely respect Exophase’s work on stuff like gpSP and the NEON software renderer in PCSX ReARMed, but at the same time, this whole Android selling business I cannot respect even if there is a lot of technical ingenuinity going on in the background. It is ethically wrong, it is morally wrong and it is taking advantage of users by artificially increasing prices just for psychological effect - and Nintendo has every right to shut such a thing down if they want to - let’s not BS ourselves here - Nintendo DS is still a current-gen system and ‘profiting from copyright infringement’ is a real thing when there is money involved. Last time something like this happened they made a big stink about UltraHLE and UltraHLE wasn’t even being sold at that time.

Really, it ties into crap like this - and I see this all the time in authors coming from console scenes - they have some weird notion of what ‘open source’ is about that really doesn’t make any sense and if anything is more like ‘console piracy scene values’ converging with some weird notion of ‘open source’-

I cannot respect this stuff, and I never will. Whether the incentive is ‘moralfag’ reasons or ‘looking to get a job from a commmercial games company’ (most of the time the two are related), or whether it is simply making a lot of money, coders and authors alike are turning their back on free software principles and just going batshit crazy with all sorts of crazy proprietary licenses that are neither here or there. Same thing with Nemesis and his insane licensing ideas for Exodus. People want to maintain control for control’s sake instead of respecting the principles of scientific development - standing on the shoulders of giants and all that. No man is an island and science is NOT and SHOULD NOT be a respector of licenses/copyrights that STIFLE scientific discovery - information needs to be free above all.
