Hello I have a platinum gc (the 1 without component video) and im trying to run cps2 games through sd media launcher; however, when I launch a rom using cps2 or fba core i get a screen that says Exception (DSI) occured! then some text and code #s below that. How would i go about to correct this problem?
I believe someone else reported this same error recently but there’s no solution, AFAIK.
You can’t fix it, the GameCube doesn’t have enough RAM to load CPS2 games.
There is one CPS2 game that is small enough to run on the CPS2 core for GameCube: Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo. All the others are just too big. There is a similar size cap for Neo-Geo and other cores on the GC release. The FBA core takes up most of the GC’s RAM so there is only room for about 3MB uncompressed game data (equates to approx 1.5MB zip size but different raw ROM data compresses at different rates sot that’s not an exact rule). I’ve got the beginnings of a compatibility list for GC which accounts for upper size limits that will cause it to crash. Hopefully I can get it merged with existing work for the Wii compat list: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=1372
If it is only about cps1, cps2 and neo geo I can provide you the rom list that work with the latest RA gamecube bild, so pm me if nesesary. I could not test the FBA alone core because it does not work in this version because is too big to be launched.
OK yeah let’s collaborate and get a GC list published. What homebrew loader environment are you using? I’m using XenoGC and Costis SDLoader and it’s able to load the FBA core fine. Except of course is 18MB of mem used up so no much wiggle room left to decompress and load a rom set. But still a respectable number will work.
I use SDML plus Swiss latest nightly build as boot method in an unmodified gamecube. My configuration is a Sd gecko in slot A, where I have Swiss and the SDML adapter in slot B, where I have my roms. As I have already stated here viewtopic.php?f=31&t=347&start=975 the CPS2 core accept four new roms respect the previous versions, it seems they changed something to make more roms playable, so we still have a hope to play more games with this core. I do not know if somebody has tried this but I have even compressed more both the roms and the cores, but there is not change in perfomance respect the original ones. Let´s hope they do something similar to what they did with CPS1 and CPS2 to neogeo core in the next release.
Very interesting. There is definitely a performance difference between the loader types for GC. I found that Swiss already occupied more RAM that other loaders, enough to block loading FBA, and it also seemed to affect graphics driver. However for me SDLoad via mini DVD-R over drive chip performs the best as it’s less resident in memory and less interference with gx video driver. I will try those CPS2 roms you mentioned in that other thread and see what turns up. I also have an unmodified cube with SDML and would be good try out a baseline comparison to other loaders.
