"Handheld" XMB Menu Layout

Retroarch has a “Menu Layout” setting under Settings -> User Interface -> Appearance, which has choices of auto/console/handheld.

What’s it’s use? I see that on my PC auto and console seem to result to the same look, while handheld seems “bigger” and with less margins. Is it just this?

Yes, it just sets some DPI-type stuff automatically, like a preset.

How does the “auto” setting it decide whether to switch from “console” to “handheld”? On screen resolution?

I also noticed that the right cover/snapshot is not shown in handheld mode. Is it intended or is it a bug?

I don’t actually know how it decides. Probably resolution, yeah.

I think that’s working as intended, so it doesn’t take up space.

Nice to know, thanks.

I’m currently testing RetroArch on the Retroid Pocket device and I’m diving in the most obscure (for me) settings of retroarch to adapt it to the small low resolution 4/3 screen of the device. I’m starting to get to a point where I’m satisfied.

Unfortunately the version of RetroArch that ships with the device is 1.8 and the ozone menu lacks menu scaling, otherwise I would have preferred that interface. More suited IMHO to a handheld device, but without menu scaling is nearly unusable.

IMO, RGUI is a great fit for small screens. Since jdgleaver’s cosmetic improvements, it can look cool and dynamic while still having plenty of retro aesthetic.

I just tried that, and without doubt it’s very fascinating. I’ll keep an eye on it and get back to it. for the moment I’d like to experiment a little more with something more modern and “consolish”.

XMB would use some custom theme to be more “right” for an handheld. Unfortunately on the small 4/3 display the core and system names overlap with the game names. Is there a setting that makes the top row (where the system/menu name and battery/time indicators) and the bottom row (where version/core name is) do not overlap with the vertical menu options and games in a playlist?

I don’t think there are any knobs for those things at runtime. I believe you can move some stuff pre-compile, though.

Have you tried reducing the DPI? That may do some rearranging, as well.

I only tried menu scaling, if that’s what you mean. I saw that if I go under a certain threshold things rearrange, but unfortunately going under 0.95 it gets too difficult to read the text so i can not avoid things overlapping.

I think it would be a very nice addition to add a setting in future versions that makes the top and bottom rows not overlapping with the scrolling vertical lists of menu items.
