I don’t really want the ancient MAME 2003 version, but current MAME is too new to match my curated older .261 ROM set. Is there a way to get the older Android “MAME current” that was made to run .261 rom set? How and where would I be able to download?
we don’t keep old core builds lying around, sorry. You’d have to learn how to compile stuff for your system, at which point you can checkout and compile any version you want.
.261 is less than 2 years old, you have absolutely no reason to bother using an old mame version when less than half a dozen of your curated romsets are likely to be invalid. Just replace the romset whenever you find one that doesn’t launch anymore.
Firstly, look here. https://buildbot.libretro.com/stable/
Those are past stable RA versions and each entry has a “retroarch_cores” archive with all cores during that date. I’m sure you will find a version closer to your romset.
Secondly, i don’t think you will have much trouble running the .261 romset with the current MAME version since it’s not that old and 95% of the games or more will still work, especially since you have a curated set so there’s less of a chance to get a mismatch.
Lastly, it’s probably better to just use current MAME anyway because the last few months there have been a lot of important fixes that may affect some of the games you want to play.
If you scan the .261 romset with the current .280 dat (xml). Selecting only games (without machines and devices) you will have a little more than half.
And if you select the playable option (Working and imperfect) and remove the clones, you will be missing almost 900.
You can search in the built o compile the .261 core, but I recommend you to update the romset because MAME has made some important changes in the last versions and RetroArch core had a new implementation and works better.
.161 is quite a bit older than .261 though.
Sorry, I made a mistake in writing. Is 0.261
