List of cores outside the downloader?

Fortunately, the aspect ratio problem doesn’t seem to affect bezel shaders.

The core overall worked well enough for me to ditch the old citra core, because I really wanted my roms in a losseles compressed format (.zcci).

If something does not work, I’ll just try the standalone Azahar.

Oh wow, this is so exciting. I got it to work, however, when trying to load a 3DS shader by @Duimon , RetroArch freezes unfortunatlely. Shaders without bezels seem to work though.

I want to do this too but i’m not comfortable ditching an “official” core for a “wild” core that isn’t available in the buildbot.

Does this issue happen with vulkan driver? Because there IS an issue currently with glcore driver + some shader presets, especially ones with a long reference chain. And particularly on Windows 11.

I hope all 3DS cores and emulators add support for these new formats. Just like chd was widely adopted overtime. But we might need to create a public demand for it first, if you know what I mean.

zcci files are not displayed in Retroarch though.

@petran791 You can make them work with Azahar core by following these easy steps in my previous post:

I switched to Vulkan before trying. I checked that Vulkan was enabled, too. I have not tried with GLcore.

Could you do me a favor and try the Duimon 3DS advanced presets?

Thank you!

Is the Azahar core still stuck to 1st October build or am i looking at the wrong link?

The October 1st build is the latest. It is only 29 commits behind as of Dec 20th. And almost all of those 29 commits have nothing to do with the libretro core, since they are for user interface and build optimizations.

I’m more interested in warmenhoven’s todo list which includes incomplete core and screen options, and microphone support.

How can we try the azahar/citra core, not sure how to compile it for the github page?

You can read the third post in this thread for directions

How to download mkxp-z development version (not released yet):

https://docs.libretro.com/library/mkxp-z/ to play RPG Maker XP/VX/VX Ace games.

There is an unfinished port of mkxp-z to RetroArch. Currently there is no release version, its all automatic generated from Github Actions. To find the one to use in RetroArch, one has to look for those labelled as “Libretro Support”

From there choose the right file to download, with filename starting with mkxp-z_libretro followed by the OS and architecture for your system, in my case mkxp-z_libretro.linux-gnu.x86_64.PR255-a84c2dd. And don’t forget to download the info file as well from: mkxp-z_libretro.info. To use the core additional files need to be installed, described in the documentation: BIOS.

What games do work, if any for you?

Now to my actual question here. I tried a few games and none work so far. They might be incompatible due to Ruby versions or other stuff. Do you happen to know any free games that work with the core?

Azahar Libretro core has been updated to a January 22 2026 build.

I did my small part too. Now we can run compressed 3DS formats without manual workarounds.

Hope this is okay to post

So there’s a reddit thread saying there’s a core port of CEMU and RPCS3. Everyone in the thread said “fake”, “click bait” etc etc.

So while I was skeptical somewhat I checked the github page and the dev seems to be a known RA contributor, so…I figured might as well check it out. This was posted in the thread later on by a Mod who said this:

These are real cores made by a guy who does Xbox stuff, primarily, hence his interest in having them run through RetroArch vs having to not just port them but write an entire new GUI for them to work with the restricted console interface.

We haven’t hyped them up because they’re more preliminary/proof-of-concept, and we’ve gotten burned many times over the years by publicizing things like this just because they’re cool/fun and then people get the wrong ideas.

It does appear real after all (though as mentioned, very preliminary) so the people who said it’s fake are either trolls or bad actors (same people who says: “use standalone” for PPSSPP when the core is literally at worse days behind the main branch).

Anyway, I tested the RPCS3 core and so far I only get a black screen. Though I have actually zero experience with the standalone RPCS3 emu. Have not tested the CEMU core yet.

If anyone wants to test RPCS3 core, you can check out this video.

Link to the author’s github:

You will need the PS3 system “PS3UPDAT.PUP” that you can actually still download (100% legal afaik) from Sony’s website.

Then place the file in the system folder.

When you check the core information it should say it detects the file:

Again, these are proof-of-concept cores, so purely experimental.

I don’t think they’re bad actors. Most of them are actually regular posters to the sub. I think they’re just conditioned by low-info posters and youtube clickbait b.s.

Maybe you’re right. Perhaps I simply have seen too many reddit comments from people who to this day just repeat “use standalone” for things like PPSSPP or the PS2 core. I mean, the PS2 core was updated since…a least a year at this point? Old habits die hard I guess.

But you’re right that we’ve seen videos with click bait stuff as well. So it’s understandable to be skeptical as I was at first.

edit: The Cemu core appears to work, amazingly enough. So far I only see a black screen, but I do get sound, the game responds to inputs and -from what I can hear at least, seem to run at full speed. I only tested with Wind Waker HD. I’m using an old win8 rig and the driver is probably the issue. Someone with a newer PC will probably have better results hopefully.

You can follow this guide here. No external system or bios required apparently.

Nope, the game does display the gfx just fine with standalone:

so, not sure why it runs with the core but I only get a black screen.

Just a heads-up that the Azahar core will be officially made available through the normal core downloader whenever Azahar ver 2125.0 is officially released.

In the meantime you can try the latest compiled build for your platform here: At the bottom of the page. You do need a github account to access the downloads.

The latest build fixes the ‘weird aspect ratio on start up until you switch screens back and forth’ issue (at least on my end) and I’m sure plenty of other stuff.

Awesome, it’s great to have up to date 3DS emulation in RA.
