Loading stutter with large disk image files from SD card

The majority of my large disk image roms run poorly when run from the SD card (random freezes, slowdown, audio popping). They run perfectly from the internal memory but my phone does not support formatting the external card into internal memory. Is there a solution to this or am I stuck with it?
