lr-Mame2016 vs Mame.233

I have a Retropie build that runs great using lr-mame2016 which looks to be based on MAME.174. However when I use the latest non-LR (non-Libretro) MAME build many games don’t run well. I’m curious if there are any tricks to mimicking the LR build to improve Mame performance.

The worse performance doesn’t come from whether it’s LR or not, it comes from the changes in the emulation code between 2016 and now. There is already a MAME libretro core based on latest MAME btw, i believe it might be available from retropie’s build scripts under the name lr-mame.
