I’m using a Macbook Pro with i7 intel chip and I’m not able to get any controller to work with both the universal and intel apps. For example, I’m using now a Switch Pro controller but I also tested a DualSense with the same luck…
The weird thing is that retroarch recognises the gamepad (I get the “Pro controller connected to port 1”) but neither the interface or any game works with the gamepad both with Bluetooth or usb cable.
In other apps (like OpenEmu) the gamepads work flawlessly so seems is a retroarch thing and not a macOS problem…
