MAME core - Saving Controls?

I found this old thread, but thought it’d be bad taste to resurrect:

How do I make MAME save the in-game input mappings?

When you've got the MAME core open, and are running a game, you may remap the controls using a menu that you open with the Tab key. However, I am unable to get these configurations to "stick," it just resets to the default every time I load a new game. What should I do?

I’m also on 1.5.0 so I don’t know if it’s different.

My save directories are “Content Dir” and, assuming that’s my game-location, I’d like to keep it that way.

In particular, I’m using the MAME core in order to run Neo Geo CD games. I have it pulling up games just fine, but I can’t seem to save the internal mame configurations for controls.

Anyway, I created a directory: W:\Games\SNK Neo Geo CD\MAME\cfg as outlined in the above link. Then I tried to save some settings, but it didn’t do anything.

What do I need to do in order to get the internal MAME controls to save?
