my Mame Roms/CHDS/Software list are each one in a different folder. How to tell retroarch where to find them?

CHDs have to be in the same directory as the ROM, as far as I know. No way around it.
At least with MAME 2003, the CHDs need to reside in a subfolder of the MAME ROMs folder with the same name as the ROM, per MAME standard.
My arrangement is: /storage/roms/MAME 0.78/romname.zip /storage/roms/MAME 0.78/romname/chd files
Again OP, this is pretty much bog standard MAME arrangement.
There was a period where MAME allowed CHDs to be stored in the same directory as the MAME ROMs but I believe that arrangement is deprecated. Perhaps it is used with some of other libretro MAME cores – I have the most experience with 2003.
