Mapping ADDITIONAL Controllers

The Question: Is there a way to either ADD controls to the User 1 Bind listings so I can map more than one controller, or have RA call a different and separate configuration file with new User Bind mappings (though I don’t know how you can switch back and forth between configuration files when launching games), or… some third option?

The Problem: So, to setup up all your controls and map them in RA, you first #1) go to Settings/Input then User 1 Binds, User 2 Binds, etc. Going into “User 1 Binds” you can set all your buttons - B, Y, select, start, D-pad, A, X, L, etc. These all match current Xbox 360 controller settings. For the sake of simplicity, let’s say I’m using an Xbox 360 controller to play all my games that are from platforms WITHOUT keypads on their controllers. I go in and setup ALL the buttons, so there is NO button left without a setting. They are ALL mapped. THEN, #2) I go into Quick Menu/Controls and I map each button I setup under “User 1 Binds” to a button noted by the game. With Atari 2600, there’s only a single button and joystick directions. For NES, there are two buttons, start, select, and joystick directions. It’s ALL good and I can use my Xbox 360 controller to play all these games just fine.

NOW, I get to the games with keypads on the controllers - Colecovision, Intellivision, Jaguar, Atari 5200. IN ADDITION TO using my Xbox controller for controlling the joystick and 2 to 4 action buttons, I want to ADD a 12-button KEYPAD that takes the place of the keypad on the game controller. But I currently have NO WAY of getting the keypad mapped into RA because I’ve already used all my positions in step #1. I have NO button where I can map, because the Xbox controller is already mapped there.

Now I COULD use my Xbox controller to map to the keypad buttons (L shoulder = #, R shoulder = *, second joystick = 1, 2, 3, and 4…). But this is a bit clumsy. I did that back when I didn’t have a keypad, but now I want to make use of the keypad I bought for this purpose. But there’s no place left I can map it to under User Binds.

I don’t think I can go in and remap my User Binds without screwing up everything I setup in the other game systems and then save it “per core”. I believe you can only map and SAVE User Binds when you launch RA without a core loaded, so mapping them then counting on “Save by Core” to save your new User Binds mappings won’t work.

Any suggestions? I can’t be the only one to have encountered this issue.

definitely not the only one Jallen. I too have a similar need - I’d like to play a game, say an Arcade ROM like Frogger, as player 1 with the choice of either my Tankstick, or an 8 button game pad. I will be watching if someone has a thought… Good luck to us! I can also provide a lot of what I have done so far, but it’s been a series of unsuccessful stabs in the dark.
