Firts of all, i just want to thank all Libretro team for this awesome effort. Now I got a lil doubt, will be there a N64 integration on future releases? I really hope so. Thx in advance! (Sorry for my bad english!)
@iNitrox Possibly, though it would require either a new N64 emulator with software rendering (I believe the cycle-accurate N64 emulator that Hacktarux is working on would be appropriate but who knows if/when that will be released) or a new 3D renderer for RetroArch. Squarepusher has some ideas for the latter, but nothing concrete at the moment.
The latter would definitely be the more beneficial option, and probably also the less complicated of the two (not to undersell the difficulty of implementing it, of course) due to not having to rely on an emulator external to the RetroArch development circle. Not that either is likely in any immediate time frame, but it would certainly be cool to see RA eventually support hardware rendering.
A lot is riding on RGL to work out as a concept. I am going to be giving it a serious look at least and hopefully have something ready in time for when 0.9.9 rolls out.
Someone else said it best:
N64 emulation is a clusterfuck of speedhacks and workarounds.
You’d have to port the incomplete not very good current emulators or create a new one from scratch. Focus should be better placed elsewhere. I don’t think it’s worth it right now.
Mupen64 Plus is becoming quite good.
I believe that was me.
However, an emulator such as Mupen64 could work well if ever hardware rendering is implemented in RetroArch.
Well, if you want to go through all that, you could. But I think it’d make more sense to focus on 2D systems rather than 3D ones. Keep things simpler, and to focus on the “retro” part of gaming, rather than those new fangled 3D graphics. For the time being at least.
Since Psx has been already supported, i suppose n64 could be possible too, although i know they are pretty different platforms. At least, as said by Squarepusher, the possibility is quite real!
