How does one enable cheats from like Gameshark? or is this not possible? Secondly can I play MAME games?

Cheats aren’t implemented for anything except bsnes cores, I believe, and even that hasn’t been touched in a looong time, so it may not even work any more.
Yes, you can play MAME games. There are 3 MAME cores (078 from 2003, 139 from 2010 and 151 current) and a Final Burn Alpha core for playing arcade ROMs.
