Noob question? Retroarch Internal Resolution / AA compared to other emulators

Hi there guys. I’ve searched your forum and googled it for the last 30 mins but can’t seem to find a solution. I’ll be brief.

I’m new to retroarch. I been emulating for years, using many of the cores that are used in retroarch. I have a problem with the resolution or overall quality of the graphics output by retroarch. (apologies if I am naming it incorrectly in english).

When I run a SNES game in the default settings outside of retroarch, everything is crisp, there are no lines and generally the ( i think) internal resolution is wonderful. Thats default settings. In retroarch, things are a little cloudy, perhaps the scaling is out. It just does not look as good. Its like the internal resolution is not high enough?

So I tested the N64, and I get the same result. I load a game in Project 64 for example, and the game looks sharp, crisp, and well rendered (default settings). But in Retroarch, the game looks liney, not sharp, and slightly blurry and dull. I always thought this was to do with resoltuion, or scaling perhaps? But I cannot see any options in retroarch to change it. I also don’t see why I should have to, because as far as I can tell, the default settings of the Core, work beautifully, unless being run through retroarch. I can provide screenshots for comparison if someone would like? But perhaps I’m missing something obvious.

Thank you for your kind help guys.

Edit: Using Windows 64 bit - build 1.2.2 64 bit version. EDIT: ADDED SCREENSHOTS FROM SUPER SMASH BROS on N64 and Tetris for SNES.

It’s a different issue for SNES vs mupen. For SNES, I think you’re referring to nearest neighbor scaling (sharp but pixels are inconsistent in size) vs bilinear filtering (pixels are consistent in size but blurrier). For mupen, that’s the internal resolution. You can crank up the internal resolution in the libretro version by going into the in-game menu, go to ‘core options’ and then look for the one that’s 640x480 by default and change it to something larger. Load your content again and it should get rid of the jagged lines.

Thanks for your contribution hunterk. Does your advice still stand now I have uploaded the screenshots? Just wanted to check

Yeah, the SNES ones indicate nearest neighbor vs bilinear and the N64 ones are internal resolution.

Okay, thank you for the tip off. Would you mind letting me know two things? 1: Where do i find these settings to change in the snes core? I found them for n64 fine.

2: Am i likely to have to fiddle around with settings like this for other cores too? Like Genesis?

Go to settings > video settings and change HW Bilinear Filtering to OFF and then restart your content.

You’ll only have to set it for each core if you have per-core configs turned on.
