Noob Questions for MAME on IOS 1.0.0

Hey guys, I looked all over the web, and can not figure out how to get Arcade games (MAME) games to work I was told I need to get BIOS files for MAME games, but there are SO many…

Could anyone help me out on setting up MAME? There are games that I want to play and the APP just crashes when I try to load certain games.

I think this is because I do not have the correct BIOS files but I’m not 100% sure about MAME and how it functions.

This may be a noob question, but I’ve never attempted to play arcade games until RetroArch

Well let me know please guys

You won’t usually need BIOS files for MAME, except in the case of Neo-Geo games and a few others. If you’re not able to load a ROM, the most common reason by far is that you’re using an outdated ROMset. In this case, some ROMs may still work and others won’t.

The best thing to do is just make sure you have the exact set for the MAME version you’re using. MAME 2003 uses the 0.078 set (there’s a torrent available of this set at TPB), mame 2010 uses 0.139 (widely available, since it’s the basis for MAME4Droid et al, IIRC) and MAME2013 uses the latest 0.151 set (actually, I think official MAME has moved on to 0.152, but that should be close enough either way; you can get these from Archive.org of all places).

What is a Romset?

And were do I place the files and how?

I read somewere that MAME games need to Stay .zip Bc that’s how They run. Is this correct?

I think I’m understanding Romsets.

I guess my next question is what Arcade/MAME Does retroarch have?

I only see FBA and 2003

So must I get roms that are specific to these Emulators?

What If I do come across a game (dungends and dragons) and none of The emulators work?

Is this the game not being compatable?

Yes, you need specific ROMs for those specific versions. FBA is the latest, MAME 2003 is v0.078, as I mentioned. If you get ROMs from another set, even if they’re named the same thing, they probably won’t work. That’s just the nature of how MAME handles things, unfortunately.

How can I tell if a game is apart of the .078 set?

Hey , thanks hunterk to point me that mame was updated to 0.152 was a little off these day and finally totally miss that mame was updated to 0.152. (will try to update mame libretro port soon , if SP don’t before  )

@DarkraD

as far i know , with official mame , you can use “mame -verifyroms romname” but you can’t with libetro port , so hard to know . maybe you can check on mamedb to see if the zip have the required files.

BTW , would be cool if we can have a IOS and OSX port of mame 2010/2013 ,unfortunately I don’t own any @pple product so I can’t help you to do it

Well the info I got from here so far helped me learn more about MAME and FBA

The only reason I wanted to figure out this stuff is bc I enjoy finding out were original games came from and what changes have been made ext ext… Usually Arcade games have been remade ( Usually they change the INSERT COIN option to just START lol ) but some remakes have overhauls and thus taking away from originality, like difficulty, added or removed content ext ext…

I’m just super super OCD about playing games in order, chronologically and release date wise. I get irritated when I play a game and find out that it wasnt even the 1st game of the series.

Final Fantasy for instance, i played 7 1st and it was amazing, i figured there was 1-6 but figuring how THAT game series actually plays out was a hassle. I understood tho each game had its own story and the # just meant the next game that held to the franchise.

Anyways thats all folks
