Noobie asks questions

Greetings retroarch!

I have a couple of questions regarding this emulator:

1: Will there be support for the 8-bitty controller at some point in time?

2: i cannot seem to find the windows and linux versions? following the release threads, i end up to a page saying “Not found”

3: savestates\saves I already found out that the saves and savestates are not compatible with snes9x. tried playing on snes9x on my pc, dropped the savestate and save to my android, but it did not find it. since i cannot find the pc version of retroarch, i can only assume it will work when i use the pc version savestates with the android version.

4: is the PS2 on the roadmap? is there any roadmap i could follow? (no need for ETAs, but i like to have something to look forward to)

i apologize for the lenghty post…

lastly: i remember i helped squarepusher once! i noticed a very slight delay on input on the NES emulator for the PS3 :stuck_out_tongue: (who wants to touch me?)

thanks for this genious piece of work. having 1 emulator for this many systems. brilliant! ¨

thanks from norway! -vaalir

That controller looks painful to use. I can’t give an answer to this.

http://forum.themaister.net/viewtopic.php?id=12 Scroll to the last post in the thread.

I spent 5 days in Norway this month. Beautiful country, and the people I had the opportunity to meet were very friendly.

tom, that link you gave me is the one i have checked earlier, both 32 and 64 bit versions give me the page not found error!

and the 8-bitty controller is OK, nothing more nothing less :S its just like holding an old NES controller, but it also has enough buttons for SNES use, wich is really nice! i honestly think i enjoy it so much because of its retro form-factor :stuck_out_tongue:

glad you had a pleasant stay here, hope to have you again! (unless you were here to sell drugs and rape people\animals…)

If you’re ever in Trondheim, you can buy me a beer

@vaalir What flavor of linux are you using? If Debian-based, you can try the debs from my PPA: https://launchpad.net/~hunter-kaller/+archive/ppa/+packages

I know Maister has an Arch AUR entry for RetroArch, as well.

Re: Savestates I wouldn’t depend on savestates working across architectures. For that sort of thing, you’re better off using SRAM.

For PS2 support, do you mean as an emulator core? If so, that would require RetroArch to have a hardware renderer rather than the software rendering that is currently used. The same issue keeps n64 from being available, currently.

if i’m ever going to visit mom again, i’ll PM you and buy you that beer :stuck_out_tongue: (she lives in trondheim)

i’m using ubuntu, so i’ll try out your PPA. SRAM (ingame save?) works across windows/ubuntu/android?

PS2 support, maybe a was a little ambitious on that one? PCSX2 still doesnt have it right even.

ok, how about hyperspin integration?

Is this the iCade thingy I’ve been hearing about? Does it report keycodes? If so, there’s a mode in RetroArch - go to RetroArch Settings - Input Settings - set Debug Input Reporting to Enable, start up a core and any game (doesn’t matter), and report to me BOTH THE NAME it reports at the start when you press the first button on the pad (will show up something like HID: [name] unbound") AND report to me the keycodes that each button on the pad generates.

If the iCade thingie reports keystrokes instead, we might have a problem.

The only thing I regret about the SNES9x Next fork (and it’s possibly too late to turn back now) is how I destroyed backwards compatibility with the original SNES9x savestate format.

Not sure if I should move back at this point since it would just cause a whole lot of other people to become mad that their savestates suddenly no longer work.

SRAM should be totally crossplatform though and cross-emu.

That controller looks painful to use.[/quote]I tend to agree, I find the straight/square button layout is awkward, but that’s just me. I’m personally more inclined to use something with the post-NES era tilted/diamond arrangement. Retrolink’s SNES replica is decent, although I’d rather use an actual SNES controller because I find Retrolink’s products lack in overall build quality too much for me. Otherwise I generally just stick to a PS2 controller.

sadly, it seems like keystrokes…

“The key combos for the buttons come in pairs: “dc aq xz we kp lv go Im hr jn yt uf” (googled around and found this) it shows me no HID of any sort, and it says pad 0 : x 64 +++

let this video show instead: http://youtu.be/hLEnhdl4q4E

the question then, would be, if its worth it to bother working on this, since i do not believe there are many people who own this controller!

too bad about the savestates, i was trying to play a little snes on my pc, have dropsync running on my android, so i could pick up exactly where i left off when i head outside, and continue from where i came when i got back home. oh well, i can either use SRAM, or use the retroarch for PC also, so thats no biggie.

but maybe think about this for a feature in the future: like i do, connect a dropbox account with the retroarch android app wich automagiccly uploads your savegames and savestates? implemented in the android and pc app! thats convinience!

skudd. thanks alot for the links! i’ll be sure to keep them in my dropbox. and bookmark that page .P and i agree with your opinion on the retrolink controllers, i have the SNES and N64 ones, and they seem a little… off?
