PCE-CD Windows filenames too long?

I was messing around with some pc-engine fan translations, and couldn’t get them to load up under Windows.

Because the same files loaded up fine under Retroarch for Wii U, I thought it probably had something to do with the filenames being comically long. So I changed the filenames to something simple, then went in an edited all the entries in the cue file to match, and that solved the problem.

  1. Is there a way around this problem that is a little less labor intensive? and

  2. is this problem exclusive to the pce cores?

EDIT: in this case, the game in question is a cue file, two iso files, and a whole bunch of .wavs.

This is something Windows struggles with. I work in IT support for my company, and every once in a while I get a call about it 'cause someone has some file directory that is 50 words long, 25 folders deep and a file, I kid you not, like: “!!!JANUARY REPORT FOR PRODUCT ORDERING DRIVER SPREADSHEET VERSION 52!!!”. (I wish I was exaggerating lol)

Windows only seems to be able to handle ‘so much’ in a filename or file directory.

Honestly just rename the games in a manner that isn’t insane and you’ll likely never notice it again. That’s something I’d just consider ‘best practice’ anyway when curating your personal digital collection - a lot of the downloads out there just leave me scratching my head with “Who labeled this?” lol

EDIT: The forum shortened it, but picture 2 dozen “!” on each end of that file…

Yeah I’ll probably just have to do it by hand at some point. Thankfully I’ve only got like 4 of them.
