PCSX-ReARMed on Shield playing FF8, game crash during battle

First off I want to take a moment to say that retroarch is beautiful, and very well done.

That being said, I keep crashing when playing Final Fantasy 8 on my nvidia shield. The game plans amazing, until a battle starts, then while the audio switches to battle music, the screen locks up, and as far as I can tell, the game is frozen, as I don’t hear the cursor move.

I’ve tried updating, uninstalling, fresh install, changing the paths, having everything (cues, bins, and bios and save states all in one folder, checked file name of bios, scph1001.bin).

I’ve even obtained a new cd image to try to eliminate that. I’m on cd1 at the start of the game.

Does anyone have any ideas? I tried to take a screenshot of the frozen graphics but it took it blank. I’m not sure how to get it to record any error codes, if it’s producing any.

I’ve also tried running off internal memory instead of the sd card, that didn’t change anything either.

I’ll willing to try things again, and in a day or two can rip new images of the discs to give that a try. I’ve tried simple googling, and searching these forums and come up with nothing.

Any ideas? Help would be much appreciated, thanks in advance.

Does it do the same thing with Mednafen-psx, as well? That core will be hella slow, of course, but the crashing could be specific to the ReARMed core.

I can’t get that core to load anything. I’ll redo the file structure and reinstall and try again. From internal instead of sd.

If you search online for ‘ff8 battle freeze,’ it appears this is a (pretty common) problem with PCSX’s (and any derivatives’) built-in BIOS. Make sure you have an appropriate BIOS dump in your ‘system’ directory and you should be all set.

i had the same problem before. when the battle mode begins the game crashes and the screen just turns black. i was able to fix it though. i dont know if its the same case for you but what i think was happening was i got too many auto save state for the FF8. what i did was disabled auto save state and look in the directory where the save state files are stored then deleted similar files for FF8 save state. did a power cycle and it worked…
