Pcsx_rearmed pad set to analog -> FFVIII battle menu glitchy controls

I’m running RetroArch via RetroPie on a Raspberry Pi 2 B, emulating PSX under pcsx_rearmed.

Out of the box, pcsx_rearmed_pad1type is set to “standard” by default and everything is great – except for the lack of analog controls. Setting that to “analog” does the trick though, and for the most part everything is fine.

The exception is in Final Fantasy VIII. The controls are perfect, until I enter a battle. At that point, pressing a direction or action button is either not registered at all, registers once, or registers twice, with zero predictability. This makes the game nearly unplayable, as getting to the correct menu option is incredibly frustrating and many unintentional selections are made.

It’s wildly strange to me why this would happen, only for this game (that I can tell) and only in battles. Note that if I drop into the RGUI at this point, the controls there are perfectly fine. This is only for pcsx_rearmed, only in-game, only during an FF8 battle, only in analog mode.

Any thoughts? The digital directionals in this game drive me nuts.
