Problem Getting Retro Arch to run on my PC

Hello, I am new to using frontends. Ive been playing emulators for years, but just in the last few weeks have bothered to look and discover things like Hyperspin and rocketlauncher and Retro Arch. I am running into a problem when trying to launch Retro Arch through rocketlauncherUI.

I was attempting to load a Genesis rom. The loading screen came up with the old Seag style grid on black background, the loading bar went to 100%,then Retro Arch program crashed to desktop. I got a message from windows saying retroarch.exe has stopped working and it was searching for a solution. All of my other emulators work just fine. Its just Retro Arch thats malfunctioning. not saying the program is bad. obviously something is my configuration is out of whack, and thats what im hoping someone can help me with.

Has anyone had this problem or know about a workaround?

My PC is,

Looks like it’s trying and failing to use the d3d backend for the video driver. Switch to ‘gl’ instead. You can do this either through RetroArch’s menus in settings > driver or with a text editor to edit retroarch.cfg (look for the line 'video_driver = “d3d” and change it to “gl”).

Dunno why it would be using d3d and/or why it’s crashing from the launcher but not from RA itself. Perhaps the launcher is pointing to some other config?

Im not sure where to find that in rocketlauncherUI?

Ive gone into the settings, tried to ensure its correct. launched retro arch manually, thought rocketlauncher, but that again is without rocketlaunchers assistance, same as hitting the .exe
but when i tried again using rocketlauncher, it crashed again. ive opened the config file in Retro Arch and it is set to “gl” so the issue must be in rocketlauncher somewhere, i just dont know where to look

One thing I did try was to change the driver TO “D3d” in the config file. What happened then was that rocketlauncher showed the loading screen, hit 100% and then went black. I could hear the game loading now, it didn’t crash to desktop, but i couldn’t see anything. Just a black screen.

Dyspare, I think RocketLauncher might be loading in additional config values when launched via the UI. The default files they have set up for RetroArch make mention of Per Core and Per System Configurations. A long shot but without full debug info from the RocketLauncher uhh, launch, not enough info is available.

Two things to do; 1 - Change your path to Retroarch in Rocket launcher to what hunterk has in their sig. “retroarch_debug.exe --menu --verbose --log-file log.txt”

If/when the rom fails to load, drop in the log file here.

2 - Look to see if RocketLauncher really is dropping in config files somewhere and what it’s doing with the video driver. I’m going to assume you’re using windows and know how to get to the folder via the command line.

Navigate to your retroarch/config/ directory in the command line. Run:

FINDSTR /M /S “video_driver” *

See what file names get spit out and if those files have d3d configured. Let’s assume that RocketLauncher is sucking those files in with an --appendconfig switch.

I too am having an issue managing to load the latest 64 bit portable version on an older machine today for the first time.

Because I am a new user it seems that I am not yet allowed to post a new thread and this was the closest that I could find, will hope that it will be deemed OK to do so.

When I run the retroarch.exe, the start screen appears (window with File, Command and Window menu items) for about a second then then just drops out.

I tried the 32 bit version but the same happens.

I then found a site that contained older versions and proceeded to try 1.7.2, and 6 other versions back to 1.6.7.

The only one that I could find to download that did load was 1.3.4.

Machine is an Acer 5750 (Core i7 2630QM, 6Gb RAM) and whilst I appreciate that it is an older machine, it would still seem powerful enough for retro gaming.

I then found how to generate a log, which shows:

[INFO] RetroArch 1.7.3 (Git b2ceb50897) [INFO] === Build ======================================= [INFO] Version: 1.7.3 [INFO] Git: b2ceb50897 [INFO] ================================================= [INFO] Environ SET_PIXEL_FORMAT: RGB565. This doesn’t seem to indicate anything useful.

I’ve done the usual things such as end unnecessary processes and temporarily disable internet security/av but to no avail.

Ran dxdiag (Directx 12) and that found no issues either.

Are there any other useful things that I can check?

Thanks.

This is your problem (or at least one of them). You’ll need to open your retroarch.cfg in a text editor and change the ‘video_driver’ line from “gl” to something else. “d3d11” is a good one to try. If that fails, you could try d3d12, d3d10 or gdi (this last one is a last resort).

Thank you very much for the reply.

When I looked in retroarch.cfg there was only 1 entry.

So I looked at the retroarch.default.cfg file and found the entry there, so copied all the contents to the retroarch.cfg file and edited there.

Unfortunately none of the options worked and resulted in the same thing.

Update: That did give me a thought though, so I started with a complete blank retroarch.cfg file and just added the video_driver entry on it’s own and it immediately worked with the d3d11 entry (all of the others worked too).

Thank you so much for the solution
