Problems with Android/PS1

As my name implies, I’m a noob when it comes to stuff like this, so stick with me here.

I’m running RetroArch version 0.9.9.6 on a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 inch, with Android Version 4.1.1 (per my software update, I am up to date.) I am using the PCSX-reARMed [NEON] to play and I have two real bios installed: scph1001.bin and scph5500.bin.

So far I’ve only played one game on RetroArch, mostly because I’m weird & I play through the whole thing before I start another one. The game I am working through is Star Ocean: The Second Story on PSX. Until today, I only had minor issues with the game, that I solved by reading the various threads on here or found a simple work around. But this one I can’t seem to find a solution for, so please help!

I’m playing and I’m about 3/4 of the way through the game, on the second disc. The game is supposed to go to a cut scene, and I have a saved state that starts about 30 seconds before the cut scene. I do not have a save point in-game, since every time I would quit Retroarch & reload the game, I would lose my in-game save (it would say “no data” when I would try to load a save through the in-game system.)

My problem is, the cut scene starts just fine, but then we get a spot where a bright light flashes for about 30 seconds (to simulate an exploding ship) before it cuts back to the game. The game continues to freeze at the point of the bright light. The audio continues to work (playing the typical music), but the video simply hangs there. The only buttons that work are the ones for RetroArch itself, not the gamepad. No matter what I do, I cannot get it past this point. Here are the things I have tried so far:

  1. Reset RetroArch.
  2. Reset my Tablet
  3. Fast Forward
  4. Frameskip (set on 0, 1, 2, and 3 at different times/attempts)
  5. Changing the Latency Audio (in case the problem was the audio/video sync)
  6. Calibrate the Frame Rate
  7. Installed 2nd bios (originally had scph1001.bin only)
  8. Started a new game to see if it hangs during other graphic heavy cut scenes (it doesn’t, or at least not during the first scenes of game)

Now, one factor that may or may not come into play: when I was playing earlier this evening, several other cut scenes were showing the title/credits instead of the original cut scene, but once the cut scene was supposed to end, it corrected itself. I also had two instances where I went into a battle and the screen went black. I could still fight the battle, but I could not see and I had to completely reset RetroArch to fix it.

After trying everything else, my only thought on how to fix it is to play the saved state on another platform (for example, my PC) then do a save state again after that point and put it back on my tablet. I haven’t found any information either way if this is even possible with RetroArch, but it seemed logical to me if is possible to transfer save states.

Any ideas on how to fix it? Is the PC workaround possible? Or am I stuck to never finish my game on my tablet?

Looking around online, I’m seeing several people having similar issues with this game, leading me to think it’s a PCSX-r problem, rather than a RetroArch-specific problem.

For the in-game saves, by default, RetroArch only writes its saves to file when it exits cleanly (i.e., not when it’s left running in the background and then killed later). You can set an option to enable autosaving, which will write to file every 5 seconds or whatever, which can alleviate this issue as long as you wait a few seconds after saving before killing the emu.

Thanks! Since I don’t use PCSX-R except through RetroArch, it hadn’t occurred to me that could be the issue. I’ll do some research and see if there is a fix.
