Retroarch Android - 7zipped PSX Roms

I can load an UNZIPPED PSX rom by selecting the .cue file.

If I pick a .7z zipped rom, then retoarch crashes instead of unzipping it and opening the .cue. I tried .zip format and it still crashed.

Even worse, when retroarch android crashes, it just halts instead of giving a useful error message. It would be nice, for example, if the unzip folder was not writable, it gave a helpful error message instead of just crashing.

Which version are you using? The one in the Play store? A more recent build? There was a lot of work done very recently that added 7zip support. It wasn’t there at all before.

It didn’t affect the inability to write to SD cards in newer Android version, though, so that issue still applies.

I was using the 2014-09-07 version from that guy’s dropbox account.

It didn’t work for regular .zio or .7z. It just crashes. I can load unzipped psx roms.

And .zip format works for other cores, just not with PSX Rearmed core.

Wait… zipped works. It’s just VERY SLOW to load. That’s why I thought retroarch crashed.

I had to use Windows to convert it to .zip format, not rely on 7zip to convert to .zip format.

But .7z format didn’t work at all.

I tried .zip again, this time it didn’t work, very weird. It starts the emulator but goes to bios not the rom.

The current compressed image implementation for single file roms. For PSX you need to load bin+cue images, which may contain more than one fil so I guess it would just crash.

It crashes for me with mednafen psx at least

BTW, I did some benchmarking, extracting a 7zipped copy of MMX4 in a Core i5 2500k @ 4.6Ghz takes 15 seconds, then loading with CD image cache takes 9 seconds.

That on a mobile device could probably translate to what? 30 seconds loading for 85MB savings. Not worth it imho.

You should at least give a helpful error message rather than having the emulator crash. You should also do that if the unzip directory isn’t writable.

I’d rather have the extra SD card space than have to wait 60 seconds to load a game, but now I know that PSX must be unzipped.

Maybe I should get these:

I agree that exiting cleanly and showing an error would be bettershould be better

Have you tried converting your images to the .pbp format?

I thought that bin/cue format is the “preferred” format for PSX? Isn’t it best when there are multiple tracks?

Anyway, I already have .7z bin/cue PSX collection from Redump. I’m not sure it’s worth the hassle of converting them.

But yeah, if I converted them to a format where it’s all contained in one file, it should work.

Bin/cue is the preferred format. .pbp offers the data savings you are looking for and loads just as fast. Google psx2psp.
