I am not a linux expert but I got this issue . The core is correctly downloaded but cannot be installed. The log just says that it fails for permission issues .

Set the path for your cores to somewhere else, where you have write permission e.g.:
/home/user/cores/
You can change this in Settings -> Directory
Did you install RetroArch with PPA? If you are using the build-in core updater, than you can deinstall the cores provided by the PPA
