Retroarch on PC (win 32)

I’ve tried following this guide: http://filthypants.blogspot.com/2011/11/getting-started-with-ssnes.html

…and have got everything to work until I click the ‘Start RetroArch’ button. Then it just opens the “Retroarch || Remote” window and freezes there (not responding). Can anyone help me point out what I’ve done wrong? Thanks in advance.

p.s. not sure if related, but if I try to click and drag the Phoenix GUI to reposition it on my monitor, it snags and stops responding as well.

Is this 32-bit or 64-bit build? 32-bit build is known to have strange issues on Windows XP at least. Always use 64-bit build if possible.

It’s 32-bit, unfortunately. Is 64-bit compatible with a 32-bit system? I’m running Windows 8, should I be concerned?

You can try using my 32-bit builds, which some people have had better luck with: http://www.mediafire.com/download/cb305osj69ykjiv/retroarch-v0.9.9-win32.zip http://www.mediafire.com/download/8hvkukv676rfsiz/retroarch-phoenix-v0.9.9-win32.zip Just drop them into your RetroArch folder and replace the existing executables but leave the libraries.

hi hunterk, thanks for the builds. I’ve tried them and they get me past the ‘not responding’ problem.

however, I now get an error saying ‘freetype6.dll’ missing. I searched the forums a bit and came across this post with a similar problem: http://forum.themaister.net/viewtopic.php?pid=5226#p5226

I tried your suggestion in that post (renaming ‘libfreetype-6.dll’) but it loads and immediately crashes. Were you able to find a solution previously? Thanks in advance.

No, I don’t think I ever heard back that there was still anything wrong

Like maister, I have no Win32 system to test on, unfortunately. Can you try launching from the command line to see if it gives you any informative errors? (ctrl+shift+right-click in your RetroArch directory, choose ‘open command window here’ then type ‘retroarch.exe -v’)

sure, here’s what I got back: http://i.imgur.com/pKFXtHy.jpg

I’m not sure what it means though. If it helps any, my dedicated graphics card just died recently, so I’m running on 5 year old integrated graphics. Could that be a factor?

You need -v --menu if you want to start up in RGUI. No arguments is a special case that implies --menu.

Ok thanks. Here’s ‘retroarch.exe -v --menu’:

it opens up for a split second then crashes and leaves this behind.

Install drivers correctly.

I’m sorry, I’m not sure how to do that. Would you mind guiding me?

Download latest drivers from your vendor. The error message in your log suggests very outdated or non-existing drivers (especially common with GL on windows).
