To be fair, i’m not sure any official neogeo game had a redump for 15+ years, so it should never be a problem with neogeo.
Neogeo romhacks are getting updates though, which brought one question to my mind : are romhacks available as .neo roms ?

i converted a fbneo set with the NeoBuilder Tool found here: https://stoneagegamer.com/neosd-downloads.html
This tool created over 260 .neo roms including some bootleg, hacks and prototypes. Sadly the RA Scanner created Playlist is missing around 10 games (f.e. Sengoku 3) but thats not very far from perfect
Hi Hunterk, sorry to bother you. I am new to the forum. I am having a problem with my Geolith core on RetroArch. I was trying to start a new post, but it seems that I can’t post anything, perhaps because I am a new user. I was also trying to contact you directly, but I couldn’t send you a private message neither. Not sure if it is about permissions or if I can’t find the option…
I have the TerraOnion - SNK roms (.neo format). I was not having any problems using the core. But then I didn’t use it for more than a year. Recently, I wanted to load some games, and I am getting the failed to load content error.
My neogeo.zip and aes.zip are in the system folder. So not sure what the problem is… I have updated the core and the core files, too. Even deleted the core and the ROMs and installed them again, but the same problem continues. I also deleted the bios files and copied them again…
I enabled the log debug and got this:
[INFO] [Environ]: SYSTEM_DIRECTORY: “C:\Users\mauri\Documents\RetroArch\RetroArch-Win64\system”. [libretro ERROR] Failed to load uni-bios_4_0.rom from BIOS archive! [libretro ERROR] Failed to load bios at: C:\Users\mauri\Documents\RetroArch\RetroArch-Win64\system\neogeo.zip
Of course, the log has more things, but I think this is the most important part. Not sure why it is not able to load the bios files, more than a year ago was loading without problems…
I would appreciate your help.
Thank you
Based on that error message, it looks like it’s expecting the unibios but isn’t finding it in your BIOS archive. If you look in that neogeo.zip, do you see uni-bios_4_0.rom in there? if not, you can download it online, as it’s freely available: http://unibios.free.fr/download.html
Hi, thanks for your prompt reply!
My neogeo.zip content hass this: 000-lo.lo asia-s3.rom neo-epo.bin neo-po.bin neodebug.rom sfix.sfx sm1.sm1 sp-e.sp1 sp-j2.rom sp-s.sp1 sp-s2.sp1 sp1.jipan. 1024 uni-bios.23 usa_2slt.bin vs-bios.rom
Yesterday, I downloaded the uni-bios-40.zip precisely from the site you suggested. I also have aes.zip, which is a copy of neogeo.zip. The strange thing is that it was working fine before. Only using the neogeo.zip and aes.zip. Even without the uni-bios-40.zip. But now I have the three of them, and it is not loading any ROM…
can you try adding the uni-bios_4_0.rom file to your neo-geo.zip archive and then re-zip?
Sure, let me try and I reply to you.
I unzipped the neogeo.zip. Added the uni-bios.rom and re-zip it. Should I copy this file and rename it to aes.zip too?
I tried it again without copying the neogeo.zip to aes.zip and copying it too. But I am getting the same error.
But the logging shows:
[INFO] [Environ]: SYSTEM_DIRECTORY: “C:\Users\mauri\Documents\RetroArch\RetroArch-Win64\system”. [libretro ERROR] Failed to load uni-bios_4_0.rom from BIOS archive! [libretro ERROR] Failed to load bios at: C:\Users\mauri\Documents\RetroArch\RetroArch-Win64\system\neogeo.zip [ERROR] [Content]: Failed to load content [INFO] [Config]: Loading config: “C:\Users\mauri\Documents\RetroArch\RetroArch-Win64\retroarch.cfg”. [INFO] [Overrides]: Configuration overrides unloaded, original configuration restored.
The original unibios file I downloaded was named uni-bios-40.zip. Inside the file is called uni-bios.rom and that is what I put inside the neogeo.zip , it is named uni-bios.rom.
But the log gives the message error: Failed to load uni-bios_4_0.rom from BIOS archive!
Does the file need to be renamed to uni-bios_4_0.rom instead of uni-bios.rom ?
I believe it needs to be renamed, yes.
It worked now. I did as you told me with the unibios and put it inside the neogeo.zip and copied it to the aes.zip too.
Still, it wasn’t working, but looking at the logs, I had to rename the files from uni-bios.rom to uni-bios_4_0.rom and also the sfix.sfix had a different name, which I had to change. I think before it was sfix.sfx or something. Because once I changed the unibios name, It started telling me that the sfix failed to load…
Perhaps something in the core changed, and the name of the bios files that it looked for changed; therefore, it couldn’t load my files with different names.
This might help others if the same problem arises.
Thanks a lot for your help hunterk!
good news this core now run neo geo cd games

it needs to have both neocd and neocdz roms present, even if you do not use the latter format or else it will not load chd and cue/bin files
Where in the Retroarch Folder do you put it?
in the system folder
