Some questions from a new user

ok,

I added NES emulator (Nestopia), I uploaded core info and database and then i pushed Load content --> Select file or Select file and Detect core (if i choose select froma collection, it is available ONLY the Super Nintendo collection, even if i try to add a new collection scanning the nes rom folder…) and the games work correctly in both ways. If i run FBA and i try to run every rom (i tried both neo geo roms from MAME and Neo Rage X) Retroarch crashes… The roms have they original name (aof.zip, fatfursp.zip and so on). I don’t know where is the problem :frowning:

So i have created a new installation of Retroarch and I downloaded a new core list: unusually the Neo geo core that i used in the previous version of FBA, named Neo Geo (FB Alpha) is disabbeared! So now i select a different core, named FBA Alpha 2012 (neo Geo). Then I updated databases and Core info as usual, then i pushed Load content --> Select File and detect Core (or Select file) and then i select some roms and then Load Archive with Core but again, retroarch crashes… :frowning: I don’t know where is the problem, I’m sure that roms are good because i use them in MAME and Neo Rage X…

thank you!

FBA and MAME ROMs are not always interchangeable. You need ROMs for version of the core that you’re using. When you load the core, down in the bottom-left corner of the screen, it will say which version you’re using (0.2.97.30, probably). Search the internet for those ROMs.

ok I downloaded these 2 cores:

 1. fbalpha2012_neogeo_libretro.dll.zip --> Arcade (FB Alpha 2012 Neo Geo)
 2. fbalpha_libretro.dll.zip --> Arcade (FB Alpha)

I have used same roms and neogeo bios that i currently have in my FBA 0.2.97.29 romset and now I have followed exacly these steps (from http://www.powerup.io/gaming/emulators/retroarch):

[ol] [li]Main Menu → Add Content[/li][li]Scan Directory → Scan This Directory (Checksums must match or games won’t appear)[/li][li]Go back to Home Screen[/li][li]Settings → Playlists → Set each Playlist’s Default Core[/li][li]In the Main Menu you will now see a Playlist for each console.[/li][/ol] And now i added 2 systems (FBA with those 2 cores and Super Nes with bsnes_accuracy) and they are available and I can see their icon and playlist!!!

Unfortunately some neogeo games don’t work (retroarch creashes) and others work but there is the right side of the screen completly black! See this picture: http://it.tinypic.com/r/28h0jm0/9

So, i’m dowloading the complete FBA 0.2.97.38 romset (it is the newest) and then I will use fbalpha_libretro.dll.zip --> Arcade (FB Alpha) that it is too v.0.2.97.38: i think that with the new romset i will be able to play correctly…i hope Or do you think that i have to modifiy something in the video options (I have default settings now)

Are you using any video filters (namely, the ntsc filter)? It can cause games of certain resolution to squeeze into half of the screen like that.

Yes, i’m using Blarg_NTSC_SNES_RGB because it is the unique RGB filter. And the RGB signal usually is the better choice in order to emulate crt.

Am i wrong?

It’s a nice filter but it only works properly on NES/SNES because it is tightly tied to the system’s resolution. Some cores, like Nestopia and Genplusgx, have the filter built-in (and in genplusgx’s case, it’s been modified to work properly with the system’s resolution) and you can use it that way without problems.

You wouldn’t want to use it with arcade games anyway because they weren’t subject to NTSC signal effects.

yeah! the roms work correctly! I have changed the filter, using now for example Super2xSal (in any case i’m downloading the newest romset of FB Alpha 0.2.97.38). I’m really satisfied! Many thanks guys! Now I set Configuration Per Core = ON and in this way, every time i load a core, if I change something, when I exit from RetroArch, Retroarch automaticaly save the .cfg file for that core and every time I will use that core, RA automatically load its .cfg file!! Yeah!

I have only this problem: using the same method described in the post above:

1)Main Menu → Add Content 2)Scan Directory → Scan This Directory (Checksums must match or games won’t appear) 3)Go back to Home Screen 4)Settings → Playlists → Set each Playlist’s Default Core

In the Main Menu you will now see a Playlist for my 2 emulators, FB Alpha and Bsnes.

Now I added a new core, Nestopia. But now, at step 4, in Playlist, I can’t find the System so I can’t set the default core for NES (see my picture: http://it.tinypic.com/r/1124qr5/9 ). And, in this case, i’m not able to see the Nes icon with its romlist…see here, i only have FBA and Snes icons/romlists: http://it.tinypic.com/r/2lsd0dk/9

I can in any case load the Nes games via Load Content -->Select File and Detect core, but in this way when I run a Nes Game, if I push Menù Toggle, I can’t manage and set up emulator controls because the voice “Controls” is missing! See here please:http://it.tinypic.com/r/207rdbd/9

Istead, if i Load a game from the playlist of the other 2 emualators (FBA or Snes), I can manage controls of that emulator: http://it.tinypic.com/r/2ujjjue/9

How can I solve this problem?

thanks!

I solved the problem of the NES!!! I have used a new installation of RA. Then I installed the bsnes core, and it was all right.

Then i insalled Nestopia core and I loaded the rom folder with only 2 roms (i’m sure that these roms works correctly with every emulator, Nestopia included!) and this time too the Nes icon with its romlist was not present. Then i added a new rom (Metroid) to the folder and I scan again the folder and now the Nes icon is present!! But only with Metroid: so it means that for some reason RA doesn’t recognize the other 2 roms See this: http://it.tinypic.com/r/2uokk9k/9

Is it possible? do you suggest a specifi site where i can find roms that are correctly recognized by RA? It is the first time I had this problem with an emulator :frowning:

thanks!

Roms need to be ‘No-Intro’ to be added to playlists.

It’s not necessary to use the playlists to play games. You can always just load a core and then ‘load content’ and navigate to the files. The playlists are purely optional.

@Axiphel: ok, I have used this tool http://libretro.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5832 and now the other 2 Nes roms are correctly recognized in the playlist! with this tool i have created the correct playlist!

@ Hunterk: yes I know, but it is not comfortable, and, in addition, if I load a game from Load Content -->Select File and Detect core, when I run a game, if I push Menu Toggle, I can’t manage and set up emulator controls because the voice “Controls” is missing! See here please: http://it.tinypic.com/r/207rdbd/9 The Controls option is available only if i run a game from a playlist.

I think that the tool can solve my problems because it can create the correct playlist :slight_smile: How can I identify if a rom is a NO-INTRO rom? Which is the difference with a rom WITH-INTRO? What doeas it mean? So I can identify if the roms that i Have are or not correct. thanks

Another quick question: I set up my video config in this way (see in particular the setting in the red square). Do you think that they are OK? Which is in your opinion the better setting? I have a full hd lcd 19020x1080. http://it.tinypic.com/r/2mzbkoy/9

Are you sure you’re using the same core when you use ‘detect core’ as when you load from a playlist? I think that option may not show if a core doesn’t support remaps (not all of them do).

I certainly have remapping available and don’t use playlists at all.

ah ok, thanks!

And can you help me about my other question please?

I mean, I set up my video config in this way (see in particular the setting in the red square). http://it.tinypic.com/r/2mzbkoy/9 Do you think that they are OK? Which is in your opinion the better setting? I have a full hd lcd 19020x1080.

Another question: using the tool for the playlist, it download automatically thumbnalis (box cover, titles,snap). By default it shows box cover. How can I disable this feature? And how can I visualize for example title or snap instead of box cover?

many thanks!

Settings -> Menu -> Thumbnails

thanks!

can anyone please help me with my other question about resolution?

thank you

If you are using ‘Core Provided’ AR then you don’t need to supply a custom viewport or a scaling ratio. So you can just set Core Provided and Integer AR (if that is what you want) and that should be enough.

Now, whether you should use Core Provided AR is another can of worms that is way too complex to discuss here.
thanks!

can anyone please help me with my other question about resolution?

thank you
ok, so if i leave core provided, i leave Integer Scale = ON and Custom Width and Height to their normal values (i think 960 and 720 respectively). Is it correct?

thanks

You can just remove the lines custom viewport lines from your .cfg file. Or set them to 0, I think. Then RA will just use the largest integer resolution that your display can handle. If it’s a 320x240 game, you should get a viewport of 1600x1200 automatically.
