Try changing the setting before you load any cores / launch any content and then quit out of retroarch as soon as it’s set. Re-launch retroarch and see if the setting stuck.

Can you edit it manually in the retroarch.cfg using a text editor or does it just snap back as soon as you load RetroArch?
Fixed by installing new retroarch, which changed the buttons now x and z are no longer, what a strange choice … Thanks !!!
In the latest nightlies, the menu navigation is separated from the retropad, with backspace for cancel and enter for accept. This was a requirement for Lakka to be included in the RPi distro downloader NOOBS.
