Subtitles issue on Ubuntu 16.04 derivates

I was figuring out some time ago that SSA/ASS subs are compatible with RA, so once I got a proper programm for conversion (I’m using SubtitleEdit) they started to show ok in MKV files I merged them in, but only in Windows. I’ve now discovered that the same files won’t display the subs on two Linux installations (Lubuntu / Linux Mint).

My guess is that there is some font issue- the stream is recognized per log, but in the Windows log, there’s a particular line about font selection:

[libretro INFO] fontselect: (Arial, 400, 0) -> ArialMT, 0, ArialMT

This is missing in Linux. Are there any known problems based on this? A possible fix?

How did you install RetroArch? It may not have libass compiled in, as it’s sometimes problematic as a dependency, IIRC.

From the PPA. The Linux Mint one I updated to the most recent version the package manager allowed.
