Sync To Exact Content Framerate with iPad Pro 11 M5

Hello,

I’ve noticed an interesting issue on the new iPad Pro 11" M5 when using RetroArch with PAL systems (so far I’ve only tested European MSX).

If I enable “Sync to Exact Content Framerate”, PAL games no longer scroll perfectly smoothly. However, on my old 2017 iPad Pro 10.5", the exact same content looked completely fluid.

Looking at Video → Output → Screen Resolution, RetroArch only shows these refresh rates on the new iPad:

  • 24 Hz
  • 30 Hz
  • 40 Hz
  • 48 Hz
  • 60 Hz
  • 80 Hz
  • 120 Hz

There is no 50 Hz mode available.

So I’m wondering if newer ProMotion displays on iPadOS are now limited to these fixed refresh rates, and when the source content is PAL (~50 Hz), the system falls back to 48 Hz instead of true 50 Hz.

That would explain the periodic microstutter/judder visible in scrolling games.

Has anyone else tested PAL systems on recent iPad Pro models and noticed the same behavior?

I tested with the latest Retroarch, blueMSX core (set MSX in Core Options → System) and River Raid game.
