The aspect ratio is wrong - solved

Please see my thread “Correct aspect ratio setting - NES.”

Retroarch is doing something wrong - it’s cropping overscan and then stretching the remaining image to fill the 4:3 area. This is wrong. The NES displays a 4:3 image with overscan visible. Retroarch looks like it is cropping the overscan and then stretching the remaining image to fill the 4:3 area, thus the horizontal stretching and an incorrect aspect ratio.

edit: solved - see thread “correct aspect ratio setting NES”

After launching a game: video options -> crop overscan OFF then restart.

Or, depending of what you desire, change the screen ratio, there’s the custom one.

I already have crop overscan off. Something isn’t working right because the image is still being stretched horizontally. I’m using 1.0.0.2 windows 64 bit.

Here’s Retroarch in 4:3

Here’s the same shot taken with a real NES hooked up to the same TV:

Finally, here’s Nestopia standalone in 4:3, showing the same ratio as a real NES hooked up to the same TV:

Not sure what’s going on because the visible (non-overscan) area of the picture is in the same dimensions in Nestopia standalone as it is on a real NES, but the real NES shows left horizontal overscan while Nestopia doesn’t. I was going to say that maybe Nestopia is trimming enough off the top and bottom so that when the image is zoomed to fill 4:3 it is in the same ratio, but it looks like the real NES is cropping the same amount. I’m confused. I guess I need to check if the real NES is displaying slightly wider than 4:3, or if Nestopia is slightly narrower than 4:3. Regardless of what’s going on there, Retroarch is stretching the image in 4:3 and I already have crop overscan set to off.

EDIT: Ok I think I might know what’s going on with the difference between the real NES and Nestopia standalone. The real NES on the LCD is displaying the background color on the left side of the screen, which is not part of the overscan, I think (not 100% sure here). Thus both the real NES on the LCD and Nestopia standalone are cropping overscan in the same way, which is why the “active area” is in the same ratio in both shots.

Retroarch is doing something weird when it comes to cropping/filling the 4:3 area. I get the same horizontal stretching with overscan off or on. What is going on, here? Whatever Nestopia standalone is doing, it’s right.
