What Am I missing for Sega Genesis?

I want to use Sega Genesis I have the Bios set in System Directory. I have Retro Arch Looking in that directory I have the following Bios [BIOS] Genesis TMSS (USA).zip [BIOS] Sega TMSS (World).zip when I try and load a game (Aladdin USA) I get One or More firmware files are missing… I am Using genesis_plus_gx_libretro core ALSO I HAVE IN THE SYSTEM FILE [BIOS] Sega CD (USA) (v1.00) What am I missing?>

You can tell if a core is finding your BIOS by loading the core but not any content and then go to main menu > information > core information. It will list all of the BIOS files that the core will accept and whether or not it sees them.

load core (genesis_plus_gx) then go to Information > Core Info.… this should show you the bios names and tells you if your missing them or not.

Or you can go and skip bios checking by going into Settings > Core and set Check for Missing Firmware Before Load to OFF. of course if you play cd-based games you wont be able to until you have the correct bios in its correct filename and location (bios is case sensitive).

Thank you both I will check when I get a chance tomorrow. By the way I do not plan to use any CD bass games but only ROM based just an FYI for you guys thank you for your help

TMSS needs to be named bios_MD.bin and put in your system directory to work. You don’t need it unless you want to see the white text before the Sega logo though. The three Sega CD BIOS files need to be named: bios_CD_E.bin, bios_CD_J.bin and bios_CD_U.bin.

Can f the files are zipped or do they have to be unzipped

BIOS files need to be unzipped AFAIK.

all of my files are MD not BINs is this an issue?

your BIOS files should not be *.md files. They should be BINs. If they have the *.md extension, check their checksums against the ones in the core info file. If they match, you can just rename them.

HUH? and how do I do that?

wait are you talking about bios_CD_U.bin?? I found this when I went to information>core info… those are missing.

yes, the bios files.

how do I change an MD file into BIN file??? your losing me

If it’s the same file, which you would find out by comparing the MD5 sum of your file against the ones listed in the core info file (if you don’t know how to get an MD5 checksum, just google it), you can just rename *.md to *.bin. If it’s not the same, there’s no converting it, you just have to track down the correct file.

In the short term, you can go to settings > core and set ‘check for missing firmware before loading’ to OFF and it shouldn’t stop you from loading Genesis/MD games whether you have the correct BIOS or not.

well I think I got it working…

thats good to know then…

THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR YOUR HELP… I really like the way you all gave instructions…example INFORMATION>Core Info…ect

Just to let you all know… when you all start talking about CHEKCSUMS AND md5’S I DONT KNOW WHAT YOU Are talking about!

I intend to do a You Tube Video THANKING ALL OF YOU here and you will see what I have accomplished…Lets put it this way A guy, no programming skills whatsoever. I muddling his way thru RETROARCH HYPERSPIN ROCKETLAUCHER ect…wants to build a game cab. Its like brain surgery with a roto tiller…!

the easiest way to check for the crc of the file, is to compress it with 7zip, then open the zip/7z file and check on the column CRC and compare with core info.

.md files are just renamed .bins if I remember correctly, so renaming should work.

Awakened That is exactly what I did I just took the MD file made a copy of it then took the copy and renamed it.bn instead of .MD. like I said earlier I really appreciate the step-by-step directions you all gave. But when it comes to the technical jargon I get lost
