Last I heard, they got to a point where they wanted/needed the libretro API to support a second, independent framebuffer, which it doesn’t have currently and would be a significant change to support.
I’m not sure why this is a showstopper for them vs compositing both screens into the same framebuffer, or perhaps something else is actually holding it up and this is just a “nice to have” sort of request. Dunno.
