What is the consensus on updating to new versions of RetroArch without wiping cfg?

Is it generally safe to leave the config file intact from one version to the next? Or is it suggested instead to actually wipe the file out and reconfigure anything to avoid unforeseen nastiness?

I ask because if you’re using Android, it might update without you even knowing and your config would be intact. Same on Linux if using the PPA. Yet on Windows, the zip file would contain a fresh cfg file so you’d be wiping all of your settings out unless you foresee this and manually preserve the file… so not sure which way is preferred.

Old configs can cause problems, so that’s the first thing we ask someone if they’re getting strange behavior. OTOH, it’s usually not an issue, so I think the best course of action is just to keep using old ones unless/until you run into issues.

Btw, in Windows, if you download the ‘minimal’ package, it’s just the retroarch.exe and retroarch-joyconfig.exe that you can drop into your existing installation instead of downloading everything fresh each time.
