What is wrong with these N64 roms?

I play N64 on my Android (Samsung Galaxy Note 3) using the Mupen64plus core, and was wondering if someone could help me diagnose some problems? Many games run perfectly fine, but some do not play quite the same.

Opening games such as Mario Party 3 and Pokemon Puzzle League leaves only a black screen with an input overlay, why? In other games, i experience lots of audio/video stutters… particularly in some main menus. When racing in F-Zero X, the game stutters if there are too many players on the screen at once.

In Mario Party 1, at the start of the ‘Mushroom Mix-Up’ minigame, Toad raises a flag but the CPU players do not budge, neither do the mushrooms. Jumping in the water does not end the minigame, which means you’re stuck. Someone else found this bug as well: https://groups.google.com/d/topic/mupen64plus/2bng4O2o1BU

It may be pure coincidence, but i seem to have more issues with roms that have a .z64 extension than those with an .n64 extension, but this may be completely irrelevant. I’ve tried both .n64 and .z64 versions of Pokemon Puzzle League and Super Smash Bros, and have ended up with the same results.

You should probably report this in the Android forum instead of the Nintendo one.

Regardless, if there’s a bug that appears in mainline mupen64plus, you’re probably going to see it in the libretro core, as well. Unfortunately, N64 emulation isn’t particularly mature, considering how long the system’s been around, and many of the emulators are closed source / win32-only. Mupen64plus is the best open source option, currently, but its plugins lag behind some of the closed source options somewhat.

It seems that there is a issue with Pokemon Puzzle in upstream: https://code.google.com/p/mupen64plus/issues/detail?id=568

Neither libretro core or standalone opens this game.

Mario Party 3 (USA) opened here.

Has the mupen core been updated since March? I’ve been hoping an update to Android would come around that might update it.

How did you open Mario Party 3? I have the .n64 rom of that game, but everytime i open it with the mupen core, all i see is black.

I think this forum section is for RetroArch ports for Nintendo consoles, like Nintendo Wii, not for Nintendo cores…

Are you sure you have the no-intro roms? Take a look: http://datomatic.no-intro.org/

You should check md5sum of your rom, maybe you have a bad dump.

I tested in my laptop, Linux amd64, .n64 rom. I didn’t tested yet in my smartphone.

Whoops… i think you may be right, my bad. I saw Nintendo and thought i was in the right place :stuck_out_tongue:

Are you sure you have the no-intro roms? Take a look: http://datomatic.no-intro.org/ What is a no-intro rom? Is that the zipped file that includes all versions of one rom in a collection? If so, I’m not really sure i need all of that…

You should check md5sum of your rom, maybe you have a bad dump. This is a worth of look, but I’m a little doubtful. Do you have any recommendations of a good md5 checker? I was thinking freeware, but there may be something online too…

No, those are goodsets, no-intro sets are the best, includes only one version of a verified ROM

The Internet Archive has been hosting No-Intro sets for over a year, why anyone would still want to use romsites for those games is beyond me. Instead of dismissing any advice given to you, you should try to look up some things yourself for once and just give it a try. Mario Party 3 is working perfectly fine, it’s either your rom being broken or you are using a really old RA/Mupen build.

No need to be patronizing, i myself have done a fair amount of searching, but these forums are also here for a reason. I had no intent on dismissing any of the advice given, including yours.

Mario Party 3 should work for me as well, regardless of where it was found, but considering that Android RA hasn’t been updated since March, i feel this should be taken into some account.

Can you try it on 1.0.0.3 PC? if it works there then you might have something
