What's the story with Seawolf?

MAME 2003-Plus has a couple of mysterious options called crosshair_enable (“enabled”) and crosshair_appearance (“simple”), yet nothing renders on a game like Seawolf and Seawolf2. Until you go searching through the source code, the appearance option can also be set to “enhanced”.

The draw_gfx function seems to do internal rendering, that is, it does not make use of any external artwork / crosshairs as you might use from Mr. Do’s Artwork.

What gives? Is this is a fruitless endeavor to have a visible crosshair from the latest RetroArch on a Pi 400 running Seawolf? I’m just looking for a Nay / Yay, and if a Yay, a “how to”, thanks.

From my quick research the crosshair settings are for lightgun games. It seems different options become available depending on the content.

FWIW I get a crosshair for Seawolf 1 & 2 on both MAME 2010 and Current.

BTW if you are looking for something other than the standard seawolf overlay, I have a mame layout that could be easily used as an RA overlay. here
