White Screen and Crash

Hi there - I thought I had got Retroarch setup on Mac OSX well enough for a bit of a Super Mario World marathon. However I have a huge bug - when I ask it to run the rom it white screens and locks-down the whole computer. Never seen anything do that on my Mac. I can do nothing - no sign of mouse, keyboard, gamepad doing anything. All I can do is a hard reset of the Mac.

Does anyone have any ideas about this?

Can I replace the app with a fresh download WITHOUT losing all of my settings etc… I had the right shaders, setting, controller setup, a few other cores and roms (all that I personally own). Then BAM!

I don’t want to go back to OpenEmu.

Also what is happening with the OS X nightlies - are there any releases stable or otherwise since 1.2.2 release it’s like the main pages have been abandoned?

Appreciate any help. Bruno

I believe some of the settings are within the app bundle, so you’ll lose those if/when you overwrite, but most of it will be fine. Since app bundles are relatively portable, have you tried re-downloading to see if it acts any differently (i.e., without trashing your old one first)?

Hi again - What is the difference betweens app bundles and the app download?

In general this difficult to upgrade without losing a lot of stuff (because it’s part of the app image you’ll be replacing) is very worrying going forward with Retroarch. Has anyone figured out the best upgrade method?

By “app bundle,” I mean RetroArch.app. I haven’t looked at the OSX download in awhile but I assume that’s all that’s in it.

There isn’t much that lives in the app bundle, settings-wise, AFAIK. I was mostly just covering my ass so you didn’t flip out if/when something did get wiped out. I think the cores and info files live in there… maybe menu assets? Those things are fine to overwrite.

 gotcha - I’ve had a look inside and it does look that way. It seems an unusual way to do a OS X app. It doesn’t appear like even a prefs file lives outside the bundle which is almost unheard of. Seems like everything except the roms are inside. I really hope someone knows of a in-bundle file we can simply replace to upgrade - some executable type file. Otherwise it’s start again each time.

Appreciate your help on this btw

@brunojenso, You arre dealing with a frustrating white screen issue in RetroArch. First, try updating to the latest version and cores. If the white screen keeps locking up, consider clearing the config files after backing them up. You can replace the app without losing settings. Just back up the config folder.
