Why on earth am I unable to get cheats to work?

I’m a fairly recent RetroArch convert who’s absolutely in love with the software and, at this point, know what pretty much every RetroArch setting does and have an easy time finding any setting that I need to modify. Unfortunately, though, despite seldom feeling the need to use Game Genie or Pro Action Reply cheats, the few times I do desire to use them I can’t get them to work . . . and I’m stumped as to why. I downloaded all available cheats using RetroArch’s built in Online Updater and have attempted to load them but they never work. After loading a game with a core I go into the RetroArch menu and do the following:

First I go to Core Cheat Options. Then I go to Cheat File Load. Then I select the core for the specific console I’m emulating. Then I select Game Genie or Pro Action Replay. Then I select the cheat file that corresponds to the game I’m emulating. Then, finally, I switch on the cheats I want to use and then return to play my game.

. . . And absolutely nothing happens. Am I missing a step? What am I doing wrong here?

Apologies that my first post here sucks. It’s just that, at this point, I really am quite desperate to know what I’m doing wrong.

Cheats are broken for me too and not all cores work for cheats, have you tried other nes cores?

Tested working for me with Nestopia and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (USA). Did you hit “Apply Cheat Changes” (4th line on last screenshot).

Some cheats just work for a particular region of that game, that’s the regular annoyance.

edit: tested those cheats you showed for super mario 3: they don’t work with the USA version or Japan rev.A. Don’t know which version they need.

I also tried Game Genie codes with no luck. Oddly, they work in the standalone version of Nestopia (UE and the original). So methinks there’s something wonky with RetroArch’s cheat engine.

Gonna install older versions of RetroArch and do some testing.

What are your results?
